Wow everyone at the party with this festive treat that looks like a flag but eats like a cake pop! Guests simply grab a stick and pick up their goodie!
1 box devil’s food cake mix
1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, at room temp.
1 cup mini chocolate chips
1 cup finely chopped walnuts
1/2 cup, plus 2 Tbs. mini marshmallows (about 60 pieces)
2 cans (16 oz. each) white frosting, melted and divided
Red concentrated paste food coloring
3/4 tsp. royal blue concentrated paste food coloring
2 tsp. white nonpareils and/or star-shaped sprinkles, like Wilton
Prepare devil’s food cake mix according to package directions for 13" x 9" cake; let cool. In bowl, crumble cake. Stir in cream cheese, chocolate chips and chopped walnuts, adding 5 to 6 Tbs. water, if needed, to hold mixture together.
Using heaping tablespoon of cake mixture, form ball around marshmallow. Place on lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining marshmallows and cake mixture to create 60 balls. Freeze 1 hr. or until firm.
In bowl, combine 1 can melted frosting and enough red food coloring (about 3⁄4 tsp.) to create desired red hue. One at a time, dip 48 cake balls in red frosting to coat, arrange on wire rack set in baking pan.
Set aside 1/3 cup white frosting. In bowl, mix remaining white frosting and enough blue food coloring (about 3/4 tsp.) to create desired shade of blue. Dip remaining 12 cake balls in blue frosting; place on wire rack and sprinkle with nonpareils and stars. Drizzle reserved melted white frosting over red balls. Chill 1 hr. or until set.
To make flag: On platter arrange 3 blue cake balls, then 3 red cake balls in a vertical line. Repeat 3 times to create 4 blue-and-red rows. Add remaining red cake balls for a total of 6 rows of all red cake pops. Serve chilled with lollipop sticks on the side.
