Pet Food Recalled After 28 Dog Deaths and Several Illnesses Reported

If you have this food you should toss it immediately.

A major pet food manufacturer has recalled several lots of dog and cat food after at least 28 deaths and eight illnesses were reported in dogs across the country.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a report on December 30, 2020, that Midwestern Pet Foods has voluntarily recalled the below dog and cat foods after levels of aflatoxin — a toxin produced toxin by the mold Aspergillus flavus which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food — were found to be present in the following lots of Sportmix High Energy food:

  • 50# Sportmix Energy Plus Lots Exp 03/02/22/05/L2, 03/02/22/05/L3, 03/03/22/05/L2
  • 44# Sportmix Energy Plus Lots 03/02/22/05/L3
  • 50# Sportmix Premium High Energy Lots 03/03/22/05/L3
  • 44# Sportmix Premium High Energy Lots 03/03/22/05/L3
  • 31# Sportmix Original Cat Lots 03/03/22/05/L3
  • 15# Sportmix Original Cat Lots 03/03/22/05/L2, 03/03/22/05/L3

Symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning include sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting jaundice (yellowish tint to the eyes, gums, or skin due to liver damage), and/or diarrhea. If your dog or cat has been exposed to the recalled foods and is showing symptoms, you should call your veterinarian immediately.

“Although this pet food recall is still unfolding, we are sharing the facts we have so far because the levels of aflatoxin found in the recalled pet food are potentially fatal,” Dr. Amber McCoig, deputy director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine Division of Compliance, said in a statement.

The recalled Sportmix food had been distributed to online stores and retailers across the country. If you have purchased the recalled food, do not feed it to your pets and discard immediately. The FDA also recommends washing and sanitizing pet food bowls, cups and storage containers that have come in contact with the affected food.
