Coconut Bacon Is the Deliciously Healthy Swap We Were All Searching For

Bacon isn’t just a breakfast favorite, but also great for adding delicious smoky flavor other meals. Now, those who are looking for a healthier, vegan option can rejoice over coconut bacon!

It’s no secret that coconuts are one of the healthiest and most versatile tropical fruits. From weight-loss benefits to using coconut oil around the house, they’ve become a kitchen staple.

And although pre-made, plant-based food options are becoming more readily available at grocery stores, vegan chef Rachel Ama has been making hew own “bacon” from coconut that you can add to a side, a salad, or a sandwich.

After going vegan, the chef still wanted to enjoy some of her old favorites, so she began to search for ways to recreate what she was craving. “I wanted to enjoy all the incredible food I’d been eating, but without meat, fish, and dairy,” she told Euro News. “And, from there I just kept experimenting and my love of food grew and grew.”

Coconut bacon is delicious on its own as a salty snack or add-in for any dish. Here, Ama shares her recipe for using it as a crunchy topping for green beans, which is a perfect way to spice up any holiday side dish.

As you can see, the process is quite simple. You take unsweetened coconut flakes (Buy on Amazon, $10.99) and toss them in your favorite spices and flavorings, such as paprika and soy sauce, before baking them in the oven until they’re crisp. And there you have your own homemade coconut bacon!

The most important thing to keep in mind when making coconut bacon? “Leave them to set and cool, and they’ll get crispier and crispier,” Ama explains.
