Sometimes the roughest part of the school year isn't the first day or the first week. For some students, the tough times don't start until after winter break. By that time, even the youngest kids have sorted out who their friends are and which classmate is the best target for being picked on.
Brittney Elizabeth Salway, a first-grade teacher, happened to be in the hallway when she stumbled upon a very moving scene. She had her phone in her hand, and a coworker, who was also there, urged her to take the shot. It turns out that one of the students in the school had been acting out in class for the last few weeks. His teacher couldn't get through to him, and turned to another teacher, Mr. Bailey, for help. So Mr. Bailey sat the child down in the empty hallway for a little conversation.
Salway didn't really hear the whole conversation, just enough to know that the student was being picked on and the teacher was trying to lift his spirits. But she called it a beautiful moment. "Sometimes teaching is sitting down in the middle of the hallway with a kid who is having a rough time and having a heart to heart."
The photo is now going viral--a powerful lesson in the power of teaching, whether it's inside the classroom or outside in the hallway or playground.
