We’re in an age of multitasking, checking our email while we brush our teeth in the hope of getting even more done in the same amount of time. And we want the products that we buy to do the same, which is why we buy toothpaste that cleans, protects, and whitens. So why should your fruits and vegetables be any different?
There are, in fact, pieces of produce that are worth more for your total health than others, according to a recent report published in the journal PLOS. These fruits and veggies, the researchers found, not only boost your overall health but also have been proven to aid your weight loss efforts.
Researchers tracked the amount of servings of various fruits and vegetables eaten by 133,468 men and women from the United States from 1986 to 2010 and examined the association between changes in these amounts and the participants’ weights in 4-year intervals, adjusting for changes in other lifestyle factors like smoking status and physical activity. Although they found that simply increasing your daily produce intake was associated with weight loss, it got more interesting as they drilled down into certain fruits and vegetables. Here’s what they found:
The Best Vegetables for Weight Loss
1. Tofu & Soy
3. Summer Squash
4. String Beans
7. Brussels Sprouts
8. Green Leafy Vegetables
12. Mixed Vegetables
The Best Fruits for Weight Loss
3. Apples & Pears
5. Raisins & Grapes
11. Peaches, Plums, Apricots
And dried fruit lovers, take heart! Although most popular diets tell you to limit your intake or cut dried fruit out of your meal plan altogether, the research shows that prunes and raisins are actually associated with weight loss. Although association does not prove causation, it’s a first step toward disproving this common belief--just make sure you’re buying the kind without added sugar.
Keep this list handy next time you’re headed to the grocery store to make sure you’re packing your cart with produce that’s going to work for your health and your waistline.
