Every winter, millions of people fall victim to the common cold. It's the same pesky cough and runny nose you dealt with last year and it's frustrating trying countless remedies that never work. But your favorite topping for buttery, toasted bread is also your secret weapon for preventing and even curing the illness.
The natural properties in garlic are the perfect combatants to your cold and consuming it raw will do the trick. Garlic contains vitamin C, minerals and enzymes that help fight viruses. Scientists believe that the enzyme alliinase plays a huge role in the cloves' ability to cure because when it's crushed it releases allicin, a compound with antibacterial qualities.
The importance of these compounds is that not only will it cure the symptoms, but it will cure the actual virus so your body is fully recovering. According to Prevention.com, a 2012 study found that people taking a garlic supplement daily had more activity in their white blood cells, which made them less likely to contract a cold and more likely to recover from a cold more quickly.
According to The Journal of Nutrition, people who ate approximately two cloves of garlic in a meal had more activity in the genes that stimulate activity in immune-boosting cells. The best part is that the garlic can start working in as little as three hours!
If you're brave enough to try some raw garlic with nothing but a bit of drizzled honey, then you can have this remedy ready to go with little preparation. But if you're not up for such a strong taste, you can mix the raw garlic into meals by adding it to salad dressing or cooking it. However, If you cook it be sure to let the cloves sit for 10 minutes after crushing or slicing them so that the enzymes are preserved before putting heat to them.
Natasha Jovan shared her garlic tea recipe on Twitter and says she swears by it.
