Quick and Easy Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe Makes a Crispy-Tangy Treat
This crunchy outside, yet tender inside dish is a cozy staple of Southern cuisine. Its popularity really took off after the release of the 1980’s film Fried Green Tomatoes, but the recipe has been a favorite for ages. And for good reason. Tangy unripe tomatoes plucked from the vine get sliced and breaded. Then they’re shallow- or deep-fried. The result is the ultimate nostalgic comfort food that’s at the top of our list for a late-summer (or anytime!) treat.
Green tomatoes are perfect for frying. They’re firm, so cooking doesn’t result in a soggy texture. Plus, the flesh perfectly softens up, making them deliciously juicy and flavorful. For our Fried Green Tomatoes recipe, we coat slices with garlic powder, salt and pepper. Then, we combine cornmeal and flour to make the coating. The cornmeal adds an irresistible crunch that’s simply addictive. Although you can enjoy them straight out of the skillet, try pairing with a dipping sauce for an out-of-this-world bite that is sure to keep you coming back for more.
