For as long as I can remember, I’ve hated my mattress. After growing up with hand-me-down bedding, I finally bought my first one when I was in my 20s. Inexperienced when it came to the wide world of bed padding, I went down a frustrating path of trying, buying, and returning more mattresses than I care to admit. But that was before I found the best foam mattress in a box of all time — the Layla Sleep Memory Foam ($474 to $974, Layla Sleep).
After trying all of the traditional methods of mattress shopping and scouring many big-name stores for the perfect sleep base to no avail, I decided to do the unthinkable and turn to the internet.
What is a mattress in a box?
A mattress in a box is exactly what it sounds like: a mattress … in a box. The digital mattress in a box boom took off a few years back, after retailers discovered they could compress and vacuum-seal mattresses — usually foam — inside boxes for direct-to-consumer shipping.
Admittedly, I was pretty nervous about making such a big purchase without being able to test it out ahead of time. But after a lifetime of mattress dilemmas — likely a big reason behind my sleep troubles and early-onset back pain — I had nothing to lose.
The thing that immediately caught my eye about this mattress was its innovative, double-sided design. The Layla Mattress is a flippable model with two firmness options: There’s a soft memory foam on one side and a firm memory foam on the other. As someone who was struggling to choose between the two levels of support, I was excited by the idea that I could essentially try out two mattresses in one. I ultimately found the soft side to be more of a medium-soft, which turned out to be the ideal comfort level for me.
Another thing that drew me in about this mattress was its copper-gel memory foam. As a hot sleeper, I knew I wanted to a find bedding that would keep me cool, and this does just that, thanks to its interwoven copper-gel particles, which transfer heat away from the body. I got this mattress in the dead of summer, and even with my heavy comforter, I slept comfortably and never woke up in a sweat.
The thing that really solidified it for me, however, were the reviews. As a side-sleeper, I had been dealing with shoulder and neck pain for some time, so I was happy to see customers reporting less aches and pain with this mattress.
One review, in particular, sealed the deal: “I am a side sleeper and the Layla mattress has changed my comfort at night drastically,” the buyer wrote. “I’ve always had issues on traditional mattresses, waking up in the middle of the night in discomfort or pain or not getting a good night of deep sleep because I was constantly rolling to the other side to relieve my shoulder and neck pain. It’s now been three weeks of sleeping on the soft side of the Layla mattress and I have been free of shoulder, neck, and back pain when I wake up. I finally don’t get terrible headaches from a kinked neck, and it has even helped to keep my spine better aligned (my chiropractor wants to order the Layla now too!). I highly recommend this mattress! So comfortable!”
As for me, I’ve had this mattress for a while now, and I can say that I’m more than enjoying it. Within the first two days, my sleep improved tremendously, as I woke up pain-free and with more energy — something I haven’t experienced in quite some time.
The Layla Sleep Memory Foam Mattress is in a league of its own and is finally allowing me to get the much-needed sleep I need — and deserve.
