They're creepy, kooky and extremely talented, here facts about our favorite macabre family

The beloved Netflix show Wednesday took 150 million viewers by storm when it aired in December of 2022 and was the third biggest premier of the streaming channel’s history. And the star-studded Wednesday cast was just nominated for two Emmys, in the Outstanding comedy series category and the Lead Actress Comedy Series category. It brought watchers a funny, entrusting, and edge-of-your-seat show that followed the infamous’ Addams family daughter Wednesday.

Here we get to know the Wednesday cast a bit better, recap season 1 and outline everything we know about season 2.

The history of the Addams Family

The Addams Family (consisting of quirky characters Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Wednesday and Pugsley) is a creepy, kooky and altogether ooky tales of a fictional family who has appeared in New Yorker comics beginning in 1938 that depicted their strange, dark and often awkwardly humorous interactions — without any awareness of how bizarre the outside world sees them.

The macabre cartoon, drawn by Charles Addams, morphed into short films, TV shows and movies. Their first on-screen appearance was the television show The Addams Family, which ran for two seasons from 1964-1966 and had a total of 64 episodes. Though it was short lived, the original Addams Family became a cult classic that was syndicated for decades.

Then in 1991 there was a resurgence with The Addams Family movie, followed by The Addams Family Values in 1993 and ending with The Addams Family Reunion in 1998 — all starring Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams. (See below how Ricci also played a key role in the new show Wednesday.)

During that time (1992-1993), there was also a cartoon Addams Family TV show that ran for two seasons. From there, the family took a short break before starring in the cartoon duo, The Addams Family in 2019 and The Addams Family 2 in 2021.

Most recently, however, the creepy and kooky family has taken over Netflix with the show Wednesday, and snared a whole new generation of fans, while enticing followers of the classics.

What happened in season 1 of Wednesday?

A teenage Wednesday Addams is enrolled in Nevermore Academy, her parents alma mater, against her will. Once classes begin, everyone’s favorite goth, ghoulish girl finds herself trying to stop a killing spree that may have connections to her family. And, to make matters worse for Wednesday, she might need to, ugh, make friends and talk to boys.

It’s a creative, funny and charming coming-of-age story (with monsters) that has all the quirky charm of the original, with a bit of a modern twist. Supported by multiple big-name stars, the Wednesday cast brings the Addams family back to life. Read on to meet them all!

When will Wednesday season 2 come out?

Netflix has greenlighted season two, “We can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky, spooky world of Nevermore,” Wednesday Season 1 co-showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough told Tudum in January 2023. “We just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.”

But when are we going to get it? As of now, there is no anticipated release date because of the writer’s and actors’ strikes. But some fans are speculating because of the shows production quality and the fact that it is filmed in Romania, it generally takes 8 months to produce after filming finishes, putting the release date well into 2024. (Sigh)
