‘Mad About You Cast’: Where Are They Now?

Mad About You, a sitcom that graced television screens from 1992 to 1999, remains a beloved favorite among fans of the genre, especially for its incredible cast. The show revolves around the lives of the Buchmans, a married couple living in New York City, portrayed by the dynamic duo of Paul Reiser (who co-created the show) and beloved actress Helen Hunt.

However, the success of Mad About You wasn’t solely reliant on the chemistry between its leads; a stellar supporting cast played a crucial role in its enduring charm. In addition to Hunt and Reiser, the talent of Anne Ramsay, Leila Kenzle, and John Pankow created a sitcom that resonated with audiences for seven memorable seasons. The series won numerous Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

When the cast came together for a Mad About You limited series reboot in 2019 and it was like no time had passed. “It really took no transition at all,” Paul Reiser told People of reuniting with his onscreen wife, Helen Hunt. “We were all so fond of each other and we spent seven years together. The minute we walked into the space, it was so familiar. It actually felt weird that it didn’t feel weird.”

In fact, Reiser and Hunt have been friends for over 30 years. “I have remained very, very close friends with Paul,” said Hunt. “Reboot, or no reboot we have lunch once a month. We really enjoy and care for each other. Hunt directed several episodes of the reboot and both Hunt and Reiser were executive producers.

Before stepping into the shoes of Paul Buchman, Paul Reiser was already making a name for himself in the entertainment industry. Born in 1957 in New York City, Reiser started his career as a stand-up comedian. His sharp wit and observational humor caught the attention of Hollywood, leading to appearances on popular talk shows like The Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman.

Reiser’s acting career gained traction with notable roles in films such as Diner (1982) and Beverly Hills Cop (1984). His ability to seamlessly blend humor with genuine emotion made him a perfect fit for the role of Paul Buchman. As the central character in Mad About You, Reiser brought a relatable and endearing quality to Paul, making audiences laugh and empathize with the ups and downs of married life. Reiser was nominated for multiple awards for his role.

Reiser also wrote several The New York Times best-selling books including: Couplehood, (which sold over two million copies), Babyhood, and Familyhood.

Recently, Reiser starred in two hit shows for Netflix: Stranger Things (he plays Dr. Sam Owens) and The Kominsky Method, for which he received an Emmy nomination.

Helen Hunt, born in 1963, in Los Angeles, California, began her acting journey at an early age. Before Mad About You, Hunt appeared in television series like Swiss Family Robinson (1975-1976), The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1977), The Fitzpatricks (1977-1978) and It Takes Two (1982-1983).

However, she rose to fame and is best known for portraying Jamie Buchaman, which earned her four Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards. Her chemistry with Paul Reiser was a cornerstone of the show’s success, and her character’s evolution from a newlywed to a mother resonated with viewers.

In addition to TV, Hunt appeared in many movies including the 1997 film As Good as It Gets, in which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

She also appeared in Twister (1996), Cast Away (2000), What Women Want (2000) and Soul Surfer (2011). Hunt has also moved into directing, including 2018’s The Miracle Season.

Anne Ramsay, born in 1960, in Los Angeles, played the memorable role of Lisa Stemple, Jamie’s quirky and lovable best friend. Lisa’s character brought a delightful mix of humor and eccentricity to the series. Her on-screen friendship with Jamie added an extra layer of depth to the show’s exploration of relationships. Ramsay’s portrayal of Lisa showcased her comedic prowess and she was nominated for a  Screen Actors Guild award for her role.  

Before joining the Mad About You cast, Ramsay had bit parts in various TV shows, including Mr. Belvedere and Star Trek. She was also in the movie A League of Their Own (starring Madonna and Geena Davis).

After Mad About You, Ramsey had guest appearances in a plethora of TV shows, including Dexter, House and Six Feet Under. She also appeared in films including Planet of the Apes (2001) and A Lot Like Love (2005). Most recently, she appeared in Brooklyn 45 (2023).

Leila Kenzle as Fran Devanow

Leila Kenzle, born in 1960, in Patchogue, New York, played the role of Fran Devanow, Jamie’s older sister. Fran’s character brought a different dynamic to the show, portraying the challenges and joys of sibling relationships. Kenzle’s performance added a relatable family element to the sitcom, and her comedic timing contributed to the overall success of the series.

Prior to the show, Kenzle appeared in theater productions and guest roles on TV series like The Cosby Show, the Golden Girls and Thirtysomething. However, it was Mad About You that launched her to stardom. She received four Screen Actor Guild nominations for her role.

After the series, she appeared in a variety of television and film work, including White Oleander (2002) and Identity (2003).

She then made a big career shift. After being an actress for 20 years, Kenzle got her master’s degree in clinical psychology at Antioch University and trained at The Maple Counseling Center in Beverly Hills. She specialized in adult psychoanalytic psychotherapy as well as mindful parenting work.

She opened her own practice in 2005. She now sees individuals and couples dealing with a variety of concerns including, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, grief, eating disorders, parenting work as well as issues dealing specifically with the entertainment industry.

John Pankow was born in 1954, in St. Louis, Missouri; he was the sixth of nine children.  He got his big break in 1980 in the PBS movie, Life on the Mississippi. He then got bit roles in television shows including Law & Order, Spenser: For Hire, and Miami Vice.

Portraying Ira Buchman, Paul’s cousin and best friend, was Pankow’s pinnacle of success.

Ira added a comedic edge to the series, serving as Paul’s confidant and providing humorous insights into friendship and family dynamics. Pankow’s performance showcased his versatility as an actor, contributing to the ensemble’s chemistry.

After the series, he had guest roles in several television series including Ally McBeal, Law and Order and Blue Bloods.
