Magic spells, supernatural powers and talking cats are just a few of the unworldly things audiences can see while watching the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch cast. For seven seasons — from 1996 to 2003 — Sabrina Spellman, portrayed by Melissa Joan Hart, dealt with her reality of being a witch with the help of two aunts and Salem, the aforementioned cat (actually a warlock doing penance as a feline).

As things unfold on this Emmy-nominated series, highlighted by the chemistry of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch cast, Sabrina is revealed to come from a long line of witches, though she nonetheless tries to live life as a normal teenager while simultaneously attempting to harness her powers.

While starring on Sabrina, Hart appeared in several other shows, among them Clueless (1997), Boy Meets World (1997) and You Wish (1997). In 1999, she booked the lead of the romcom, Drive Me Crazy.

Prior to the release of the series reboot in 2018, Hart shared advice for the new Sabrina, Kiernan Shipka. “So tomorrow, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina drops on Netflix. And I just wanted to send my best witches to Kiernan Shipka, aka the new Sabrina Spellman. By the way, from one Sabrina to the other … if you’re ever given a choice between a broom and a vacuum, choose the vacuum.”

The unique voice of Salem the cat, Nick Bakay, is a memorable part of the series. After his time in the Sabrina the Teenage Witch cast, Bakay had roles on The King of Queens (2005), ‘Til Death (2010) and Mom (2013). He also had a lengthy career as a producer, working on projects such as The King of Queens (2006), Two and a Half Men (2013) and Young Sheldon (2024).

The Sabrina show got its unofficial start as a 1996 Showtime movie starring Hart, which ultimately led ABC to put the series version into development. This came into play for Bakay, who shared that he got the role of Salem randomly. “I got hired to write on it first. They sold the pilot off of a pitch tape of scenes from the Showtime version, but they were gonna completely redo it, rewrite, recast. I was already in there working on it, they were looking for voices [and] I had done a lot of voice acting. They had me read for it, and I got it. It was an inside job.”
