Dolly Parton is one of those celebrities who seems more like a member of our family than a fancy star. Sure, most of us have never actually met the country queen, but her down-to-earth charm and bubbly personality always leave us feeling like we just got a big hug. Now, she’s stepping up like any good grandma or auntie would to help calm our nerves during this strange time.
Parton announced she will be reading bedtime stories in a new series called “Goodnight with Dolly.” Starting April 2, she’ll be taking on the role of “book lady” to narrate stories that are “carefully chosen for their appropriate content at this moment in time.” It will air live over the next 10 weeks on her social media pages, including Facebook and YouTube, every Thursday at 7 pm ET.
Take a look at the short clip below to hear Parton’s announcement:
OK, we know bedtime stories are typically only meant for children, but we are sure adults will find it just as soothing to tune into these nighttime tales. And although we’d listen to Parton read the phonebook to hear that delightful Tennessee twang, her first book choice couldn’t be more fitting for our current global situation: The Little Engine That Could. We can’t think of anyone better to remind us that we all need to keep chugging!
Aside from her virtual storytelling, Parton’s Imagination Library will also continue sending free books each month to kids under the age of 5. There are currently over 1.5 million children registered and you can add any little ones in your life to the list on the program’s website.
The library was inspired by Parton’s father, who never learned to read or write, and the singer’s dreams in her own youth. “The seeds of these dreams are often found in books and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world,” she explains on the website. We’re sure the books and her new bedtime story series will inspire plenty of sweet dreams!
P.S. Parton’s readings aren’t the only way she can help us stay happy and healthy while coping with the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis — the chorus of “Jolene” is exactly 20 seconds long, making it perfect for singing to yourself while you wash your hands!
