Adele’s weight loss shocked the world last year when she revealed she lost 100 pounds. While many fans commended her transformation, some people were upset to see her seemingly cave to an industry obsessed with body image. Others hoped she had stayed healthy during the drastic change. But the singer is putting all worries to rest in a new interview.
Adele, who released her first single since 2015 today, talked to Vogue about the ups and downs of her life in the past 6 years. The singer most notably went through a divorce from charity executive Simon Konecki. They now co-parent their 9-year-old son Angelo.
Her mental health suffered during the breakup, but she found her mood improving when she went to the gym. That’s when she started working out regularly — sometimes doing two sessions in one day!
Why did Adele lose weight?
Before and after her divorce, the singer said she went through a “year of anxiety” that forced her to make changes in her life. This led to finding comfort in the gym, which turned into a physical transformation.
“It became my time,” said Adele. “I realized that when I was working out, I didn’t have any anxiety. It was never about losing weight. I thought, If I can make my body physically strong, and I can feel that and see that, then maybe one day I can make my emotions and my mind physically strong.”
The singer started doing intensive weightlifting and circuit training sessions at a private gym in Los Angeles. She’d sweat out the anxiety and got “quite addicted” to working out.
“I do my weights in the morning, then I normally hike or I box in the afternoon, and then I go and do my cardio at night,” she said.
But like we said, not everyone was happy about Adele’s weight loss. The singer said the most “brutal” comments came from other women. It hurt her feelings, she said, but she’s used to people commenting on her body.
“My body’s been objectified my entire career. It’s not just now. I understand why it’s a shock. I understand why some women especially were hurt. Visually I represented a lot of women,” she said. But, despite the physical change, “I’m still the same person.”
Why did she get divorced?
Sadly, what led to Adele’s breakup and anxiety is something most divorced couples know all about. It didn’t end disastrously — they just weren’t happy anymore.
“I was just going through the motions and I wasn’t happy,” she said. “Neither of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that. It was just: I want my son to see me really love, and be loved. It’s really important to me. I’ve been on my journey to find my true happiness ever since.”
Her journey might not take too long. Between Adele’s weight loss and her career ramping up, the singer is putting in the work!
