A stack of fluffy pancakes smeared with butter and doused in syrup is a breakfast of champions if you ask me! When I’m short on time, I tend to reach for a boxed mix to avoid measuring every single ingredient. However, recent news from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave me pause. The agency announced two recalls of popular pancake and waffle mix varieties this morning.
What brands of pancake and waffle mix have been recalled?
Seattle-based food company Continental Mills recently issued two recalls for their pancake and waffle mixes. Their nationwide recall is for their Great Value Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix, which is sold at Walmart and has a “best by” date of 09/01/2023.
Only certain areas are affected. The company’s Kroger Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix was distributed to states such as Florida, Ohio, and Virginia. (See the full list of states in this press release.) This recalled mix comes in a two pound box and has “best by” dates listing 09/01/2023 and 09/02/2023.
Both recalls have been due to a potential contamination from the same kind of foreign material, according to the company. The reason?
“Fragments from a cable used to clear the processing line were discovered in a limited amount of product,” reads a press release on the FDA’s website states.
The company adds that in both instances, no consumers have reported any contaminated product and there have been no injuries reported to date.
Still, the FDA is encouraging people who have purchased these mixes to throw them away. You can also return an affected product to the store for a replacement or get a refund by calling the Recall Phone Hotline at 1-800-578-7832 (Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT).
Making pancakes from scratch is easier than you think.
We understand the temptation of using a boxed mix. It offers convenience when you want a stack of pancakes or waffles for breakfast! However, it’s not worth the risk in light of this recent news.
Instead, whipping up these breakfast staples from scratch may be the way to go. It saves you money and usually doesn’t require a trip to the store, because you likely already have the necessary pantry staples — flour, eggs, and sugar.
Also, you can achieve the fluffiest flapjacks by adding unusual ingredients like sour cream and lemon-lime soda to the batter. Or give your pancakes a healthy, flavorful twist with add-ins such as chickpea flour and sweet potatoes.
So, whip out your trusty skillet or waffle iron and make these breakfast staples at home. What are you waiting for? Take a look at these mouthwatering recipes for pecan-chocolate chip waffles, cottage cheese protein pancakes, and cornmeal waffles!
