The social video sharing app TikTok is positively bursting with beauty hacks. Whether you’re looking for natural beauty tips for every day or glammed-up looks for a night out, TikTok has you covered. While the app’s audience tends to skew younger, that doesn’t mean that the tips shared within can’t apply to you. We’ve adapted some of our favorite TikTok beauty tricks that work wonders for mature women. These techniques are simple enough to add to any beauty repertoire, and they’ll help you look and feel your best at any age. Read on to learn all about our favorites — no scrolling through the app required.

To Smooth Wrinkles: Try ‘Slugging’

TikTokers and YouTubers are singing the skin-plumping praises of “slugging” — slathering and saturating the skin with a thick petrolatum-based ointment before bed.

WHY IT WORKS: “This technique locks moisture deep into skin’s many layers to prevent the water loss that can make wrinkles much more apparent,” says New York City dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD. Her advice? Opt for an ointment that’s infused with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. The ultra-hydrating combo helps plump skin to reveal a smooth, supple complexion come sunrise.

TO DO: Apply a quarter-size amount of ointment all over a clean, dry face before bed; rinse skin in the morning.

To Plump Your Pout: Try Peppermint Gloss

To fake the look of a fuller pout in seconds, TikTok creators are cleverly adding peppermint oil into their favorite lip gloss before swiping the formula onto their lips.

WHY IT WORKS: Menthol in peppermint oil has a tingling sensation that when applied topically increases blood flow to lips, temporarily “swelling” them, says Michigan-based plastic surgeon Anthony Youn, MD, author of The Age Fix. Plus, the oil is rich in vitamins A and C, which work together to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin (skin-firming proteins that decline with age, leaving lips looking thinner) to “re-inflate” the pout. The result? Voluminous looking lips now and later!

TO DO: Add four drops of peppermint essential oil into a bottle of lip gloss; mix to combine. Sweep a light layer onto lips and let absorb.

To Reduce Ruddiness: Try Aloe Vera ‘Ice Cubes’

YouTube and TikTok beauty videos abound promoting the benefits of rubbing frozen aloe vera leaves onto the face to quickly ease redness from rosacea flare-ups, hot flashes, and more.

WHY IT WORKS: The plant’s saponins fortify skin’s barrier to soothe inflammation, as well as warding off future flare-ups, says dermatologist Dr. Jaliman. And applying it frozen takes the sting out of irritated skin, while constricting blood vessels to reduce redness. Bonus: The icy chill alleviates facial puffiness and reduces bloat for a slimmer looking face in seconds.

TO DO: Cut a fresh aloe leaf (which can be found at grocery and health-food stores) into two inch pieces, arrange them on a baking sheet, and place in the freezer overnight. When irritation or flare-ups occur, massage one “cube” on the face for two minutes and let residue absorb.

To Lift Features: Try Petroleum Jelly ‘Highlighter’

We love how the versatile petroleum jelly addresses so many beauty concerns, from hydrating skin to preventing “chub rub.” The newest way Instagram influencers are using the medicine-cabinet staple? To create an instant face-lift effect.

WHY IT WORKS: Placing the light-reflecting jelly onto the high points of the face helps optically perk up features to offset sagging skin and drooping features, says makeup artist Amy Zdunowski-Roeder, who’s worked with Kristen Wiig and Malin Akerman. Also great? The shiny jelly gives skin a healthy, dewy glow.

TO DO: After applying makeup, dab a pea-size amount of petroleum jelly onto the top of cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, brow bones, forehead, chin, and cupid’s bow; blend out with fingers.

To Erase a Double Chin: Try Self-Tanner Contouring

The smart spin on contouring that’s all over TikTok? Swapping bronzer for self-tanner to sculpt and slim the face.

WHY IT WORKS: “The sun-kissed color creates a more natural-looking slimming shadow that makes a double chin instantly recede,” says Zdunowski-Roeder. “And it lasts for seven to 10 days!”

TO DO: Add one pump of a self-tanning mousse onto a paper plate, dip a makeup brush into the tanner, then gently buff onto the areas of the face where you would normally place bronzer, like the hollows of the cheeks, along the perimeter of the face (such as the jawline and hairline) and down the neck. Blend with a makeup sponge to nix any harsh lines; let sit one hour before washing the face.

To Enliven Skin: Try Face ‘Shaving’

A quick scroll through beauty TikToks, and you’ll be inundated with videos of women shaving their faces with a small, scalpel-like blade in order to make their skin glow.

WHY IT WORKS: Also known as dermaplaning, this technique not only removes peach fuzz from the face, it also exfoliates the buildup of dead, dry skin cells so new, luminous skin underneath shows through, says Dr. Jaliman. An added perk: Any skin care applied post-shave will absorb more deeply into skin to boost the radiant results.

TO DO: Pull dry skin taut, then hold a face razor at a 45-degree angle against skin and shave downward in short, light strokes. Take care to go over each area once only, to avoid irritation.
