How a Face Massage Roller Can Improve Your Skin’s Blood Flow, According to Research

If you haven’t heard much about face massage roller benefits, then get ready for that to change very soon. Recent research shows that using a roller for facial massaging can help your skin’s blood flow.

The November 2018 study published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine included both short-term and long-term experiments involving healthy participants who used a massage roller on their faces. For the short term, researchers examined the effects of the roller on volunteers who did a massage on one cheek for just five minutes. Results showed an appoximate 25 percent increase in facial skin blood flow in the massaged cheek. Since great blood flow is so important for overall cardiovascular health, it’s pretty incredible that such a small change can make such a big difference for people. It’s also worth mentioning that beauty experts have often said great circulation can help your skin look more youthful and glowing. So it’s no wonder why the researchers were amazed by the speedy effects.

“The increase in skin blood flow after applying the massage roller persisted much longer than we had expected,” researchers said in a press release. “Short-term mechanical stimulation by a facial massage roller increased skin blood flow for more than ten minutes solely in the massaged cheek.”

The long-term experiment led to even more promising results. Researchers examined the effects on participants who did a roller massage on one cheek for a five-week period. They found that the practice improved participants’ vasodilation, which is the widening of blood vessels. Furthermore, they also discovered that a facial roller massage could help improve the blood flow response to heat stimulation.

They think that the reason why a massage like this one helped so much is because the cells in that massaged area produce a good amount of nitric oxide, which is known to help with widening those blood vessels.

Considering that beauty experts have been raving about face massage rollers for years, it’s great to hear confirmation that these tools can indeed be helpful for people. The best part? If you want to reap the benefits of a face roller massage, you don’t need to book a bunch of appointments at the spa to do so.

There are plenty of great face massage rollers on Amazon, including the Natural Jade Roller ($15.99, Amazon) and the HaloVa 3D Roller Face Massager ($9.99, Amazon). Hey — it might not be a bad idea to have your own spa night right at home with one of these!
