Her mom had stayed in touch with Thomas in the 10 years since he got her husband's heart, although the two families had never met in person. So Jeni wrote to tell Thomas that she was getting married, and if he'd be willing, she really wanted him to walk her down the aisle. Thomas was more than happy to do it. But he did warn the bride-to-be that his emotions might get the best of him.
Jeni's reply, according to the New York Times: “I’ll be right there with you.”
The two met the day before the ceremony--and Thomas told Jeni to put her hand on his chest so she could feel her father's heart beating. “I felt wonderful about bringing her dad’s heart to Pittsburgh,” Mr. Thomas told the New York Times. “If I had to, I would’ve walked.”
Such an inspiring story--and, as the bride has said, a way to show the world that organ donors do matter.
