Imagine you've finally gone ahead with an extremely complex surgical procedure that's not easily reversible--and you find the doctors who performed the surgery didn't take one basic precaution. That's what happened to Rachel Dorney, who lives in a small town near Manchester, England.
Dorney had gone to the Tameside Hospital to have her tubes tied. (We don't know if she's already a mom or had some other reason for taking this step.) The operation was a success and the 30-year-old went home. Two days later she felt sick--and took a home pregnancy test on a hunch that what she felt was morning sickness. It came back positive. (Maybe she already is a mom!)

When she went back to the hospital, the shocked doctors performed an ultrasound. It confirmed what Dorney already knew--she was pregnant. The British woman was shocked and made a formal complaint. Because the operation can endanger a fetus, it's standard procedure to give every woman who comes in to get her tubes tied a pregnancy test. That wasn't the case with Dorney. Now she'll have to come back in a few weeks to see if the baby is okay.

“If they had have told me I was pregnant, I wouldn’t have had the operation because it can be dangerous," she told the Manchester Evening News. “It’s horrible what’s happened, I just can’t believe it.”
We're shocked too.
