One of the World’s Best Wines Is Being Sold for Just $7 at Walmart
One of the world’s best wines is now available at Walmart for just $7, so if you can’t make it to Trader Joe’s (shoutout all the Charles Shaw fans out there), Walmart might be the next best place to score a cheap and tasty bottle of wine sans judgement. Even the snobbiest of wine-snobs would agree that this Malbec reaches above and beyond its boxed-variety counterparts.

La Moneda Reserva Malbec was named the best in the world in a blind taste test comprised of 240 experts at the 2016 Decanter World Wine Awards — the world’s biggest wine competition.”
Panelists described the wine as having “an excellent freshness” with a finish that was “full of energy,” according to The Independent. But if those vague descriptions don’t do much for you, don’t worry: The judges also praised the wine for its “fresh crushed black fruit, creamy vanilla yogurt, and pepper spice” flavors.
While $7 may seem like a sketchy bet for some, the La Moneda Reserva prevailed over 16,000 entries, scoring a 95 out of 100 points within its category, “2015 Best Red Single-Varietal Under £15.”
Until now, the award-winning Malbec was only available at Walmart’s British subsidiary, Asda. La Moneda Malbec is one of 60 such “distinctive labels” available exclusively at Walmart, including $3 table wines, premium Proseccos, and other bubbly drinks, according to Kurt Carlson, a wine buyer with Walmart’s adult beverage team.
“Any retailer can ask a distributor for some La Moneda,” Carlson told The Washington Post. “But the truth is, we’ve already bought it all.”
What is Malbec wine, exactly?
If you’re unsure of the difference between a Malbec and a Cabernet, you’re not alone. A Malbec — aptly named after Malbec grapes, the majority of which are grown in Argentina today but originated in Southwest France for use in Bordeaux blends — is characterized by its dark, inky purple color and ripe fruit flavors. Unlike Cabernet, Malbec wines have a sharp, tangy flavor, which is why Malbec wines tend to taste thinner.
