These Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Bars Give Snack Time a Citrusy Spin


Tired of the same old boring snacks? Well, these chocolate hazelnut snack bars might be just what you need to shake things up. A shot of Grand Marnier in the topping give these chocolaty treats an added citrusy zing. But not to worry — you can use orange juice instead if you’re making it for the whole family. For the Bars

  • 7 oz. hard, crunchy chocolate cookies
  • 2 oz. butter, melted
  • 4 egg whites
  • 3/4 cup caster sugar
  • 1/2 cup ground hazelnuts
  • 2 Tbsp. plain flour

For the Topping

  • 125 gram butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup caster sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 Tbsp. Grand Marnier
  • 7 oz. dark chocolate, melted


  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease an 11 by 8-inch baking pan, then line the base and two opposite sides with a strip of baking paper.
  2. Process cookies until finely crushed. Combine 1 cup of the cookie crumbs with butter in a medium bowl, then press crumbs over the base of the prepared pan. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, beat the egg whites in a small bowl with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, beating until dissolved between additions. Fold in ground hazelnuts, remaining ½ cup cookie crumbs, and sifted flour. Spread mixture over cookie base.
  4. Bake 20 minutes or until firm; cool 20 minutes. Reduce oven to 320 degrees.
  5. For the topping, beat butter, sugar, egg yolks, and liqueur in a small bowl with an electric mixer until the sugar is dissolved, and then fold in melted chocolate.
  6. Spread topping over bars and bake for about 15 minutes or until set. Cool in pan. Refrigerate until firm.
