This Strange (But Common) Mistake When Cleaning Windows Is Probably Why They’re Always Streaky

It’s all about the weather.

Cleaning windows can feel like a never-ending game of chasing down streaks, only to have them instantly pop back up again. Apparently, it could have nothing to do with the type of cleaner you’re using or what type of rag you’re wiping them down with. Instead, beautiful weather could be getting in your way.

It might sound odd, but the experts at Clean and Clear explain that washing our windows on a sunny day is one of the most common mistakes people make. When the weather is bright and shiny, your cleaner will dry up faster on the glass — leaving behind those annoying streaks even after you think you’ve scrubbed them all away.

Of course, many of us prefer to do our spring cleaning when the sun is out and we feel inspired to make everything sparkle again. But we really should wait for the cloudy weather to return before tackling this particular task. Plus, you’ll get to relax and enjoy the sun when it shines through again and shows off the streak-free look.

Clean and Clear also recommends avoiding any advice you may have heard about using newspapers to wipe down windows. Although it worked great in the past, the experts claim that most current newspaper ink contains chemicals that can stain and damage the glass. Luckily, there’s another cheap option that works without leaving behind any chemicals or streaks: coffee filters!

And while you’re giving your window glass a little TLC, you might want to grab your vacuum and an empty paper towel roll to spiff up the window tracks, too. Simply put the flexible cardboard tube at the end of your vacuum hose and let it suck up all the hard-to-reach gunk in those nooks and crannies.

Keep these tips in mind and your windows will look just as great as the view they show off!
