You Can Renew Your Glasses Prescription From Home with This Free App

Tags:

Sometimes we’re simply too busy to visit an eye doctor when we need a new prescription for a pair of glasses. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do it from the comfort of our home in a matter of minutes? Well, we’re in luck thanks to a free app that allows us to renew our prescription glasses without having to leave the house!

You just need to download Warby Parker’s Virtual Vision Test (which is only available to iPhone users at the moment). It just takes about 10 minutes to complete the steps and receive a fresh prescription! The eyewear company says this tool is great for anyone who still sees well with their current glasses, have a single-vision distance prescription, no eye health concerns, and are between the ages 18 and 65. Even better, this service isn’t limited to just Warby Parker customers — anyone can use it!

Once you download the app, they suggest having these items handy before starting the test:

  • A copy of your current prescription
  • Your current glasses
  • An iPhone 6s or newer model
  • Around 10 feet of space
  • A quiet, well-lit place

First, they’ll ask you to fill out a five minute questionnaire about your eye health to ensure you’re eligible to continue. Next, you’ll prop up your phone against a tall surface, like a bookshelf that’s eye-level, and stand 10 feet away to read an eye chart with your glasses on. It’s basically the same thing you do at a doctor’s office and takes just five minutes to complete.

Afterwards, one of their qualified eye doctors will review your results. They’ll examine how well you’re seeing with your current prescription and contact you within 48 hours. If you’re still seeing things fine, you’ll be charged $15 to renew the same prescription. Otherwise, the eye doctor might suggest an in-person comprehensive eye exam, in which case you won’t be charged for using the vision test service.

Check out their video to see how easy it is to renew your prescription from home:

Although this app is convenient, Warby Parker notes that it’s not meant to completely replace a comprehensive eye health exam. We should still make sure we’re visiting the eye doctor at least once a year for regular exams.

The Virtual Vision Test app will come in handy for those times life gets hectic and we accidentally let our prescription expire, but need new frames. Once you have the renewed prescription, you can use it to buy eyeglasses wherever they’re sold. And if you’re looking for a brand new pair, it’s worth browsing our list of the best eyeglass frames to get some inspo.

Even if you stick to the same style of eyewear, taking just 10 minutes out of your day to use the app can help you get back to reading your favorite novel with ease!
