For most of us, cake decorating never gets more complicated than piping icing onto the top to spell out “Happy Birthday” or “Congratulations!” That’s why we love this professional-level trick that comes at a beginner’s speed--and budget.
Wrapping your entire cake with a patterned piece of chocolate is a polished--and surprisingly simple--way to up your dessert decorating skills. All you need is your baked and iced cake, tempered chocolate (chocolate gently melted to prevent it from "breaking" and taking on an unpleasant texture), and a sheet of new bubble wrap. (We suggest you use bubble wrap that you have just purchased from the store.) Pouring the chocolate and letting it set on the bubble wrap gives this flourish a pattern that doesn’t require any artistic skill or hand-drawn features, but is unexpectedly beautiful.
Once the chocolate has set slightly, the bubble wrap can be wound around the cake so that when it’s completely hardened, all you have to do is gently peel the bubble wrap off to reveal a gorgeous treat. You’ll want to make this cake the centerpiece of your next party, and all of your friends will be floored when you reveal that you did the chocolate decorations yourself. Whether or not you share your sweet secret is up to you.
