“When I was diagnosed with a heart condition, I sank into a depression. I was prescribed a slew of medications and I had to have tests done every few months. It scared me so much that most days I didn’t want to get out of bed much less leave the house. So when my goddaughter suggested that getting a dog from the shelter would chase my blues away, I reluctantly agreed to go take a look.
“At an adoption event, I ended up falling instantly in love with Izzie, a sweet aging dachshund who lapped my face and made me laugh. But when I told the worker I wanted to adopt her, she warned me Izzie had a heart murmur. I froze at first, but then an unexplainable calm flowed through me. ‘It doesn’t matter,’ I said smoothing my new best friend’s ears. ‘She is the one for me!’
“Izzie and I soon became inseparable. We’d go on walks and spend our afternoons soaking up the sunshine at the park. She changed my outlook—and my world.
“When I took her for her 6-month checkup, the vet said her murmur had disappeared. I was shocked and overjoyed.
“The next week, I also had a surprising diagnosis: ‘Your heart is completely normal,’ my physician told me. ‘There’s no way to explain it.’ Stunned, I realized the miracle both Izzie and I were handed. ‘Oh, but there is,’ I replied with a smile. ‘Love is the most powerful medicine.’”
