Most of us approach dish-washing as something to be checked off our to-do list, rushing through it so we can head to the sofa and unwind. But focusing on the task can actually be relaxing, at least according to a study from Florida State University.
Researchers found that when people scrubbed their dishes mindfully--they paid attention to the smell of the soap, the feel of the dishes, the water's temperature--they felt way more inspired and much less anxious. That boost in well-being led them to speculate that if people approached all their tasks in the same intentional way, they'd be happier. Or at least less stressed.
So try it the next time you're at the sink. It can't hurt--and your dishes may be super-clean from all that extra attention.
