Keep Home-Baked Cookies Fresh for Days With a Slice of Bread

December 4 marks National Cookie Day, which basically feels like Christmas has come early! While you enjoy all your favorite cookies today, you might be thinking of how to keep them fresh so you can continue celebrating the rest of the week.

After all, biting into a homemade chocolate chip cookie that’s all dried out and hard is almost as upsetting as finding out it’s actually oatmeal raisin. We’ve all gone through it, and there’s no downplaying the disappointment. But here’s the good news: There’s an easy way to keep your home-baked cookies fresh and delicious for days on end. The best part is that everything you need to do so is probably already in your kitchen: an airtight container and a slice of white bread.

The next time you bake cookies, think about how many of them you, your family members, or your friends are going to eat right away and prepare to use an appropriately sized airtight container. After you’ve enjoyed the first sweets from the batch and the rest of the cookies are completely cooled, start loading the leftovers into your Ziploc bag or Tupperware container of choice. Just remember that this time around, your treats are going to have some company, so be sure to save enough room for the incoming slice of bread.

Once you put all your leftovers into your airtight container, simply pop a single slice of white bread on top. Then, seal that container and store it. As the days go by (let’s be real — we could never keep cookies around longer than a week without gobbling them up), you’ll be astounded by how much your cookies continue to taste like they just came out of the oven.

The reason a slice of white bread works so well to keep cookies fresh is because the kitchen staple contains the moisture that your home-baked treats desperately need. The cookies absorb this moisture from the bread, keeping them soft and supple like bakery-style confections, while the bread becomes stale and hard.

When you’re done devouring those perfect cookies, simply toss the piece of bread. It’s served its delicious purpose well!
