Birgit Rakel, MD

Birgit Rakel, MD, is the Director of the Integrative Women’s Health Program and Co-director of the Integrative Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Rakel received her medical degree from the University of Berlin, Germany, she then worked as a Family Physician in London, England for 8 years where she also completed a fellowship at the Royal Homoeopathic Hospital before moving to the USA where she became board certified in Family Medicine in 2001 and joined the Sidney Kimmel Medical College and the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences Marcus Institute of Integrative Health. Dr. Rakel was awarded a 2 year Bravewell Fellowship in 2004 at the University of Arizona with Dr. Andrew Weil, she is a diplomate of the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine (ABIHM) and board certified in Integrative Medicine in 2017, the year Integrative Medicine joined the ranks of board specialties. She is the Co-Editor of the book “Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Older Adults” a Guide to Holistic Approaches to Healthy Aging and contributed chapters to the Weil Integrative Medicine Library Series including Women’s Health, Geriatric Medicine and most recently a chapter on “Anxiety” in Integrative Psychiatry and Brain Health edited by Dr. Daniel Monti and Dr. Andrew Newberg.
