Icy Cold And Refreshing Strawberry-Basil Granita Recipe Makes An Easy Summertime Treat

A quick herb-infused syrup adds a surprising savory note to this frosty delight

Granita is a classic semi-frozen dessert that originated in Sicily. It’s simply a mixture of fresh fruit, juice and sugar that’s popped in the freezer then scraped into crystals. It makes the ultimate refresher on warm summer days. Plus, you can customize it with your favorite flavors. Best of all, it’s dairy-free and lower in calories than ice cream, so you can enjoy almost guilt-free.

With only five ingredients, our Strawberry-Basil Granita recipe is a breeze to whip up. We simmer the herb with sugar and water to create a savory-sweet syrup. But mint or tarragon would also be delicious. Then all that’s left to do is whiz up berries, lemon juice and the syrup in a blender, transfer to a pan and freeze. During summer, in-season fruit is at its finest. Try subbing in blueberries, peaches or watermelon. The possibilities are endless, so its fun to get creative.
