Are flatbreads healthier than regular bread?

Across various cuisines, you’ll find some form of flatbread — from naan (Indian) to pita (Greek). This bread is often made with flour, water and other baking staples before it’s thinned out and cooked. Since this bread isn’t as thick as a traditional bread slice, it usually contains fewer calories and carbs. Making it at home is simple, especially using a nutritious ingredient like cottage cheese, which boasts its protein content. Adding the nutrient into your diet may help with decreasing muscle loss, obesity and chronic disease risk. (Learn more about the benefits of cottage cheese.)

The versatility of flatbreads

Don’t let the thinness fool you as this bread can be filled with various ingredients to make a sandwich or wrap. It’s also great to use as a pizza crust once topped with tomato sauce and cheese and baked until melty and golden. You can even tear the flatbread into small pieces and toast it in the oven to make crunchy croutons for salad or soup. Ultimately, the options for dressing up cottage cheese flatbread are seemingly endless!

My taste test

When making this recipe, I noticed that the flatbread puffed up midway through baking — but deflated once cooled. This piqued my interest on how the flatbread would taste and feel once served. I went the sandwich route by filling it with a sliced chicken cutlet, tzatziki, tomato, lettuce and hot sauce. I was surprised at how well the flatbread held all of the ingredients considering it didn’t contain gluten, which helps strengthen most breads. The bread’s tangy and pungent flavors complemented the savory sandwich fillings. Also, the crispy yet chewy texture of the flatbread made each bite more enjoyable. Since I didn’t use the other flatbread half, I placed it in a plastic bag in the freezer and plan on warming it up another day. This recipe’s simplicity and tasty flavor won me over — so I’ll be making more batches of flatbread for sandwiches as well as other hearty delights!
