Chlorophyll water is the most recent green drink people are raving about. In liquid form, it can be added to water or smoothies — or really any type of drink you’d like — to boost weight loss and overall health.

Not to be confused with chloroform, the chemical compound used to knock people out, chlorophyll comes from plants and is what gives them their green color. You’re probably already familiar with wheatgrass, a potent source of chlorophyll that’s been around for years. However, most people tend to turn their noses up at its intense earthy flavor. While chlorophyll water relies on a more palatable form of chlorophyll that usually has a pleasant minty flavor. We’re venturing a guess this is why it is quickly becoming more popular than its wheatgrass cousin.

But what are the benefits of chlorophyll water, anyway? A study in Appetite journal showed promising results with these green-plant membranes in terms of weight loss. The researchers observed 38 women between the ages of 40 and 65. When taken as a daily supplement, they found it helped reduce the participants’ waist circumference, improved weight loss, and even reduced their cravings for junk food.

Another study from the International Journal of Chemical Studies observed several different ways chlorophyll can boost our health. It’s been shown to help encourage the production of more blood cells in people with blood disorders like hemophilia or anemia. In fact, it’s sometimes referred to as “green blood.” The research also explained how chlorophyll induces the production of antioxidant proteins that protect us against cancer-causing toxins.

You may have heard that chlorophyll can also help with body odor, which is why it’s sometimes found in the ingredient list of natural deodorants. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been enough substantial research to back that claim up, but it also doesn’t hurt to try.

If you want to try adding chlorophyll to your daily routine, it’s as simple as buying it in liquid form, like Nature’s Sunshine Chlorophyll Liquid ($17.55, Amazon) or Benevolent Nourishment Chlorophyll Liquid Drops ($24.67, Amazon), and adding a few drops to water, smoothies, or any other drink really. You can also stock up on ready-made chlorophyll water like Verday Chlorophyll Water, which includes flavors like cucumber, lemongrass, and watermelon ($10.99, Amazon).

Remember to consult your doctor before you start sipping on it every day. If you get the OK, you can look forward to an easy, minty fresh way to hopefully help improve your health!
