Water filters have become increasingly popular over the years — and for good reason. Having clean drinking water is something we tend to take for granted, but your H2O isn’t always as sanitary as you may think. In 2019, the nonprofit Environmental Working Group and Northeastern University reported that 43 states had been exposed to dirty drinking water. USA Today also reported in 2017 that 63 million Americans had been exposed to unclean water, with some of the most common water contaminants including bacteria, fluoride, and lead. An easy and eco-friendly way to make sure you’re drinking the freshest, most pristine water possible is to pick up a solid water filter. These handy little devices remove unseen contaminants, such as chemicals, heavy metals, and organic compounds, which are commonly found in tap water. Whether you get your water from a pitcher or a faucet, we’ve rounded up the best water filters to ensure you’re left with nothing but clean water, 24/7.

How clean is your drinking water?

In today’s day and age, most of us are lucky enough to have worry-free access to suitably clean drinking water, but over the last couple of years, more and more people have become affected by contaminated drinking water — most notably those subjected to things like bacteria- and lead-ridden water.

Thankfully, there are a couple of ways you can check your water’s status. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) releases yearly reports on the drinking quality of your city and state to keep you informed about what you and your family are ingesting. (Check out this year’s reports here.)

If you’d rather take testing into your own hands, there are two alternate methods. The first and most obvious way is to use your senses to see if there are any signs that may unsafe. If the water looks colored or cloudy, chances are, it may not be safe to drink. Weird smells or taste may be other indicators that your water’s not at its peak for consumption.

You can also opt for an at-home water testing kit ($34.95, Amazon). Equipped with strips that change colors according to the contaminants found in your water, this is one of the most effective ways to figure out just how clean your drinking water really is.

To erase any would-be worries from your mind, however, we highly recommend using a preventative water filter, which typically removes between 95 to 99 percent of contaminants before you ever lift your glass to your thirsty lips.
