How to Make Your Bedroom Feel Like a High-End Hotel

Tags:

There’s nothing more indulgent than a night in a high-end hotel. Hello, king-size bed, feather pillows, sheets with the highest thread-count, and a white fluffy robe — not to mention a fully stocked mini bar and room service at your disposal.

Rhiannon Taylor, founder of In Bed With, is someone who knows what makes a luxurious hotel stay. “For me it’s all about an incredible bed — from mattress to sheets. I also love personalized details. It shows a hotel really focuses on the guest’s experience,” Taylor says.

Because staying in hotels on the regular is not realistic or financially viable for most of us, we asked Taylor to share some simple ways we can recreate that luxe-hotel vibe at home.

It’s all about the bed.

For Taylor, it’s all about the bed — and we couldn’t agree more. On average, we spend one-third of our lives in bed, which is long enough to justify spending money on a good quality mattress, we say. A good mattress is supposed to last you at least 10 years. If you work that out into cost per night, even a $2,000 mattress ($1.80 a night) is a small price to pay for comfort, support, and a sound night’s sleep.

Invest in plush pillows.

Cloud-like pillows that also provide support are a must. Mix it up with a memory foam or latex pillow on the bottom for sleeping and some soft, feather pillows on top for propping yourself up for breakfast in bed.

Splurge on luxurious sheets.

Good sheets are just as important as a quality mattress and pillow. “There are lots of great hotel brands that invest in sleep doctors, signature linen sprays, etc. So the bar has been set really high, which is why I set about making my own bed at home as good as the luxury hotels I stay in,” Taylor says. “Having hotel-quality sheets is a must, not only for that feeling of luxury in the bedroom, but also for a great sleep.

Choose quality over quantity.

Invest in timeless, high-quality furniture that will last you for years to come. Cheap furniture sticks out like a sore thumb and brings the style of a room down. Quality furniture doesn’t have to cost you a lot, either. You can pick up vintage designer pieces for a steal at second-hand stores.

A great statement chair, bench seat, or ottoman is a must for any bedroom. Or, if you have the room, a luxurious lounge or chaise will take your bedroom to another level of style and comfort.

Pick the right lighting.

A mix of lighting is important in the bedroom. While standard hanging lights are important for functionality, lamps or pendants suspended on either side of the bed are a must for setting the mood and providing task lighting for reading. Warmer, low-lumen globes will create a more relaxed feel, while setting you up for a good night’s sleep.

Also worth considering: a wall sconce or reading lights with a dimmer switch recessed into the ceiling for a luxurious hotel vibe.

Keep it clutter free.

The biggest thing that sets a hotel apart from your home is the fact that it’s completely clutter-free. You’ll only find the essentials in a hotel room: bed, bedside tables, reading lamps, towels, and toiletries. There’s no stuff distracting you, no mess to be cleaned, and no washing to be folded, which makes for a calm and neutral environment where you can truly relax.

Declutter and organize your bedroom to create the same clean, minimalist aesthetic, and we can assure you that you’ll be feeling zen in no time.

Add an ensuite.

If you have a budget and the room, add an ensuite bathroom. There’s nothing more luxurious than your own bathroom and the ease of rolling out of bed and into the shower. Adding a second bathroom will also help to increase the value of your home — a win-win situation.
