Fire Cider Will Boost Your Immunity and Spike Energy

It'll lower your blood sugar, too.

A glass of fire cider will boost your immunity and warm you up from the inside out. This apple cider vinegar-based drink is said to not only to give you energy, but it may also prevent colds and the flu. That said, you can reap fire cider’s many benefits all year round.

What is fire cider?

Fire cider, also known as fire vinegar, is a concoction dreamed up by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. “At the time, I really wanted vinegar tinctures to take off, so I came up with this recipe and thought the combination of flavors was fabulous — hot, sour, pungent, and sweet,” Gladstar said. “Not only does it taste good, but it’s also easy to make and uses common herbs that you can get from your backyard or local grocery store.” Gladstar eventually published her fire cider recipe in her book Herbal Healing for Women ($9.99, Amazon).

The nice thing about this tangy tonic is that it’s easily customizable. Fire cider’s main ingredient is the apple cider vinegar, but you can adapt it to your own tastes. A traditional fire cider recipe includes horseradish for clearning sinuses, ginger for fighting infection and aiding digestion, garlic for it’s antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, onions for their cold-fighting properties, cayenne pepper for boosting metabolism, and honey to make it more palatable. Apple cider vinegar is also known to balance blood sugar levels, so fire cider is truly a magical mixture.

How to Make Fire Cider at Home

It may take awhile to brew a batch of fire cider at home because you have to soak your ingredients in the apple cider vinegar and then let them sit for a few weeks. Then, you strain out the roots and veggies and bottle the remaining liquid. The good news is you can make fire cider in bulk and use it in salad dressings, drink it straight up as a wellness shot, mix it with juice for a sweeter sip, or serve it warm like tea. Fire cider is also available for purchase online or at some specialty stores.

So, the next time you’re battling a chronic runny nose or feeling a little run down, reenergize with a fiery shot. One sip and you’ll be looking on the bright cider life.
