Following the online frenzy triggered by Meghan Markle’s white coat last week (reportedly now due to be renamed “The Meghan”) at the announcement of her engagement to Prince Harry, eagle-eyed fans have been waiting to see what the future royal will wear next.
The latest accessory to get the “Meghan effect” is a bag by little known Scottish brand Strathberry, which Markle debuted during her first official engagement with Prince Harry on Friday, December 1. And, much like the white coat, the tote was an instant hit with shoppers.
Strathberry told Elle UK that Meghan’s burgundy and navy version sold out in a mere 11 minutes, though other colors are still available.
At £495, ($666) the midi-tote is stocked in stores around the world, a feat in itself considering the brand is only four years old. Started in 2013 by Guy and Leeanne Hundleby (who were inspired and led by the fact that Scotland was lacking a standout luxury accessories brand), Strathberry had something of a cult following already — getting the seal of approval from Meghan will surely send it into the stratosphere.
In a statement, a Strathberry representative said: “We are delighted at the news of Meghan and Prince Harry’s engagement and wish them all the best for this exciting period. It was a fantastic surprise to see that Meghan selected one of our core Strathberry styles to carry on her first royal engagement.” They confirmed that the sought-after bag will be restocked in the new year.
However, it is possible Meghan broke royal etiquette. The queen and Kate Middleton are often seen carrying a clutch to avoid shaking hands with people when it might be awkward, Harper’s Bazaar reports.
