Joan Collins Has Some Sassy Words for Meghan Markle

The veteran actress didn’t hold back.

It seems like just about everyone has a strong opinion on Meghan Markle, and actress Joan Collins is no exception. In an interview on the TV program Good Morning Britain this week, Collins was asked what she thought of Harry and Meghan’s recent return to the UK — and she didn’t hold back.

Collins, who is set to play Wallis Simpson in the upcoming film project In Bed with the Duchess, was specifically asked if she had “comments to make about any other duchesses at the moment.” She responded with a tongue-in-cheek “Who could that be?” and then elaborated: “I have no idea. Do we need to give any of them more oxygen?”

Collins’ comments may pale in comparison to some of the outright hate that Meghan has received through the years, but it seems that the 89-year-old actress, who was made an honorary Dame by the Queen in 2014 and played Queen Mum on the 2015 TV show The Royals, might have a more traditional view of royalty.

As Alexis Carrington on the iconic ’80s prime time soap opera Dynasty, Collins embodied the diva role, with her devious schemes and extravagant wardrobe. In the Good Morning Britain interview, Collins was also asked about Meghan’s distaste for the diva label; on an episode of her podcast featuring Mariah Carey, Meghan expressed discomfort when the singer told her, “You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan” in reference to her style and confidence. Meghan said that she initially took the diva descriptor as “a dig,” but Collins has a very different interpretation.

“I think it’s rather nice to be called a diva… now and again,” Collins responded mischievously when told Meghan didn’t like being described that way. “I mean, it’s supposed to be a compliment,” she clarified.

Collins breezily brushed off any further discussion of Meghan by simply saying, “I haven’t had time to read the papers.”

So, is it flattering or insulting to be called a diva? And is Collins being unnecessarily catty? Watch the clip to judge for yourself.
