Smucker’s Recalls Dog Foods After Tests Confirm They Contain Euthanasia Drug
J.M. Smucker Company has issued a voluntary recall after several of its dog food products tested positive for the substance pentobarbital. Veterinarians, animal nutrition specialists, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that the “extremely low levels” of pentobarbital do not pose a pet safety risk, but Smucker has decided to pull its dog foods anyway, according to a press release.
So far, Smucker has identified the source of contamination — a single manufacturing facility — and has worked to remove specific shipments that tested positive, the company’s press release states. If you’ve purchased any of the affected Gravy Train, Kibbles ‘N Bits, Ol’ Roy, or Skippy’s canned dog food, contact the company at 800-828-9980 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST. Customers are eligible for either a refund or a replacement product.
