Doing Your Makeup in This Order Will Make It Last Longer and Prevent Creasing

Tags:

Many of us tend to get stuck in our ways, especially with something we repeat as often as our makeup routine. But we’ve all dealt with our foundation creasing or melting off during the summer, so we’re here to let you know it might be time to mix things up. Simply flipping a couple steps around with a “reverse makeup routine” can help your makeup last longer and keep it from highlighting any fine lines.

Most people follow this order: primer, foundation, concealer, translucent powder, and then finishing with setting spray. Of course, you may use more or less depending on your preferred coverage or whether you’re prepping for a big event. For those who go through all the steps regularly, though, getting it to stay put as we’re running errands can be a struggle (or feel outright impossible) — especially in this heat!

But Marianna Hewitt, co-founder of the skincare company Summer Fridays, shared how a simple tweak allows her finished look to last longer and also keeps it from creasing. Here’s the how she suggests you do your beauty routine:

  1. Moisturize your face.
  2. Cover with a translucent powder using a makeup brush.
  3. Spritz a few mists of setting spray on your face and let it dry for a minute or two.
  4. Add primer.
  5. Apply foundation.

She doesn’t apply concealer in the video, but you can put it on right after you finish adding the foundation. Watch the TikTok below to see her try this out and give it her stamp of approval:

NYC-based makeup artist Tommy Napoli shared with Allure that this technique has been around for years and explained why it’s a superior method. “Basically, the layering of powder, spray, primer, and foundation helps to ‘seal’ the skin underneath, to control shine and smooth texture, and ‘reinforce’ the layers on top,” he said.

What’s great about this reverse makeup hack is that you can use the same products you already have in your beauty kit. However, we recommend avoiding waterproof foundation; a new study shows they likely contain toxic chemicals that can be harmful to your health. Otherwise, you should be all set to make this your go-to makeup routine.

It’s never been easier to look more radiant and youthful all day with beauty tricks like this!
