How to Clean a Beauty Blender in Less Than Two Minutes

Everything you need is already in your kitchen.

Just this week, I almost tossed away my precious beauty blender because it was starting to look dirty and smell a little bit. I’ve only had it for about a month now, and at a whopping $20, it made me sad to think that I’d have to buy a new one so soon. I’ve read that you can use them for up to three months, but the trick is keeping them clean. So in my desperate state, I decided to find out the best way to clean a beauty blender and came upon the easiest solution ever.

Little did I know that you can actually clean a beauty blender without any fancy products. First I read that you can just throw them in the laundry for easy cleaning, but I was sure that my sponge would get destroyed in the washing machine. So I decided to search for a DIY way to clean it by hand, and as it turns out, according to beauty blogger Arshia Moorjani, everything you need to properly clean your makeup sponge is right in your kitchen a small bowl, some dish soap, and olive oil. Yup — that’s it!

The dish soap deep cleans the sponge and kills any bacteria that is lingering in it, while the olive oil helps to breakdown and remove the makeup. Trust me when I say that I did not believe this hack would work, but it did! Now my sponge looks brand new. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Pour some dish soap and olive oil into a small bowl.
  2. Use your finger to mix the oil and soap together.
  3. Coat your beauty blender in the mixture and squeeze the sponge several times to ensure the mixture is being seeped into the sponge.
  4. Wash with warm water until all the makeup comes out. If it’s still stained, repeat steps 1-3 another time.
  5. Allow to dry in a a clean, open space to ensure no moisture lingers in the sponge.

There you have it. If you were on the verge of chucking your favorite makeup sponge, this hack is here to save the day. Don’t go out and spend another $20 before you absolutely have to! Keeping our beauty products sanitary is extremely important, and luckily, now you can do it cheaply and quickly.
