Being in quarantine can really mess with your sense of style. On the one hand, you want to keep things as normal as can be and continue on with your daily routines — like getting dressed. On the other hand, with nowhere to be, it’s oh-so-tempting to stay in your sweatpants all day long. Enter: the best loungewear pieces for women.

What is loungewear?

Simply put, loungewear is casual, comfortable clothing that you can put on to kick back and relax. It’s not tight or restrictive, allowing you to move about with ease, and it doesn’t require much effort to slip into.

So how is this different from pajamas, you ask? As sleepwear and loungewear expert Jeni Doherty explained to Bare It All, “loungewear is typically more sophisticated [than sleepwear. It’s] tailored-looking clothes for your at-home shift. … Wear it for running errands, having guests over, or being a well-dressed houseguest yourself.”

Essentially, it’s cozy clothing that you can feel good in without looking lazy or unkempt — think pretty, draped tops and breathable, lightweight bottoms you won’t have to fight to put on. “[Loungewear] is made from modal or cotton blends; sometimes fleece, too,” Doherty said.

Unlike your pj’s, this clothing genre is also perfectly acceptable for stepping out in. “Loungewear used to be taboo, but now you don’t have to think twice about leaving the house in it,” Doherty said.

She also offered some words of wisdom for choosing between the two. “When deciding between sleepwear or loungewear, do ‘the doorbell test,'” she advised. “‘If I was hanging around at home and the doorbell rang, would I feel comfortable opening the door in what I was wearing?'”
