It’s hard to go wrong with nonstick cookware. Beginner cooks, amateur chefs, and even experienced pros swear by them, not only for easy cleanup (this alone is a good enough reason for me) but for their ability to perfectly cook eggs, fish, and anything that needs a flip. But not all sets are created equal. The best nonstick cookware sets come with features like cool-touch handles, no-scratch surfaces, and durable, heavy gauge construction.
Before you buy just any cookware set on Amazon, it’s important to know if your nonstick pots and pans are safe, and understand how to properly care for them so you have the same set for years to come.
Is Nonstick Cookware Safe?
Nonstick cookware gets a bad rap, but that’s because it’s often made with Teflon, the brand name for a waterproof, synthetic chemical called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). This is what gives cookware its non-stick coating and makes cleanup a breeze.
Some claim Teflon causes cancer, but that’s a myth. What actually causes cancer is perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a human-made chemical that, prior to 2013, was used in the production of Teflon. According to Healthline, any cookware produced after 2013 was not made with PFOA. Robert Wolke, professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh, told WebMD, “There is no PFOA in the final Teflon product, so there is no risk that it will cause cancer in those who use Teflon cookware.”
Still, nonstick pots and pans that are overheated (usually for prolonged periods of time over 500°F), can break down molecules that cause their coating to flake, as well as produce harmful fumes. Ingesting these can result in flu-like symptoms and be damaging to the environment.
How to Care for Nonstick Cookware
With the right cleaning and care, you can prevent your nonstick cookware from flaking and emitting harmful chemicals.
- Avoid overheating. Although most nonstick cookware can handle cook temps of up to 500°F/260°C, you should stick to preheating with low-to-medium heat. For those pans that are oven-safe (like Cuisinart Chef’s Classic Non-Stick Hard Anodized 17-Piece Set, $232, Amazon), avoid leaving them them in the oven for too long. You’ll also want to pull them off still-hot burners when not in use.
- Vent the room. When using extremely high heat, prevent fumes from harming the environment and irritating your lungs by switching on your exhaust fan or cracking a window.
- Avoid metal utensils that can scratch nonstick coating. Sets like Hexclad Hybrid Nonstick Commercial Cookware 7 Piece Set ($550, Amazon) are designed with scratch-resistant surfaces, but silicone cooking utensils are stylish, durable and good to have on-hand (we love this 8-piece set from Home Hero, $25, Amazon).
- Hand-wash with mild dish soap and a gentle sponge. Several nonstick cookware sets are dishwasher safe (like Gotham Steel 20-piece Cookware + Bakeware Set with Nonstick Durable Ceramic Copper Coating, $191, Amazon), but they’ll last longer if you hand-wash.
While some of the cookware sets we’ve reviewed below are designed to be exceptions to these rules (see this Teflon-free GreenPan set that can withstand temperatures of up to 600°F, $199, Amazon), it’s still good to consider adapting these practices if you want your cookware to last for years.
Is it Better to Cook with Stainless Steel or Nonstick Cookware?
Stainless steel cookware is commonly used by professional chefs and experienced home cooks. It quickly and evenly conducts heat, allowing for uniform cooking and optimal flavoring. The downside of stainless steel cookware — and the reason it isn’t recommended for beginners — is that it isn’t forgiving and can easily burn your food if you don’t properly manage your heat. It also can be difficult to clean, requiring wire sponges and old fashioned elbow grease to make it shine like. new.
Nonstick cookware is much more user-friendly and fail-safe. Not only does it clean effortlessly, you probably won’t burn your food if you accidentally cook with medium-high heat instead of medium. It also allows you the option to cook healthier, requiring less oil and grease. To prevent scratches and extend its life, however, nonstick cookware does require special care and silicone utensils.

Promising review: “The first pan that I have owned that works as promised. It is my favorite pan now and I cook exclusively with it. I did not season before using and after a couple of months it was gunky. I looked on the site and it said to use Barkeepers Friend for tough cleaning, so I did. It cleaned up well, I seasoned and have never had that issue again. it looks great, now build up and clean up is easy. Best of all, it is dishwasher safe. And, no gunk. Seasoning is not like with a cast iron pan. You just need a couple tablespoons of canola oil, medium heat for 4 or 5 minutes, wipe clean and you are done. Love it.”

- Oven safe up to 450°F
It’s not easy to choose the best Calphalon cookware set. This set is made for multi-tasking cooks — or those who would like to be! Each piece comes with measuring marks, pour spouts, and handles that stay cool. The lids have built-in strainers, so you can say goodbye to that colander that doesn’t quite fit in your cabinet. No burned fingers or hot food splashing on you. Love this feature! And then there are the no-boil-over inserts. I am always boiling over pots and I used the inserts and no boil over. Great feature that I will use over and over again. The set itself is well-made. Not too heavy and not too light. In fact, I have other Calphalon items and they feel the same as the older ones I got about 15 years ago. Same great quality but with new features. Promising review: “The first time I used copper coated cookware it was not Gotham Steel. Even then I was so pleased with the results, I swore I’d never use anything else. After getting a Gotham Steel cupcake pan, I saw how much sturdier it was than the other brand I had, so I bought this whole set. I am so pleased. It’s durable, works well for everything, much heftier than the other set I had (while not being much heavier) and this set is everything. I don’t bother with heavy glass baking pans, parchment paper or oil coating anymore. The handles on the pots and pans doesn’t get more than slightly warm if anything. You don’t have to scrub. Things don’t burn nearly as easily as in anything else I’ve used. And I’ve pretty much tried them all.“

I tried two other non-stick cookware sets from Amazon (in the $100-$200 range) before settling on the GreenPan Prime Midnight set. I really wanted a non-stick set that wasn’t toxic, was easy to clean, and that wouldn’t scratch or wear away over time.
