8 Ways to Use Yogurt for Glowing Skin, Thicker Hair, and More

It's for more than just eating!

Yogurt is one of the most popular superfoods around. Touted as a potent gut-healer, yogurt contains nutrients that boost your health in so many ways. But did you know that there are so many yogurt uses outside of just eating it?

Yogurt contains powerful enzymes that can boost the health of your hair and skin. It can also be used in the house, garden, and even on your pets! Just be sure that you’re using plain yogurt without added sugars for all of these hacks. Keep scrolling for some of the most creative yogurt uses we bet you haven’t heard of.

Fight blemishes.

One of the unknown (yet super helpful) yogurt uses is for acne blemishes. Yogurt contains lactic acid which works to reduce redness and inflammation of your most frustrating breakouts. To use it, just dab a little yogurt onto your pimple, let it sit for 15 minutes, and rinse with warm water.

Treat a sunburn.

You might know already that dairy helps to cool down a burning tongue or tummy, and the same actually applies to your skin! If you sat out in the sun a little too long, you can rub some yogurt onto any burned areas, allow it to sit on the skin for 10 to 15 minutes, and rinse off in the shower. And next time, be sure to use some sunscreen!

Moisturize and exfoliate the skin.

Yogurt is an excellent moisturizer and chemical exfoliant thanks to its lactic acid content. Yogurt will help remove dead skin cells and reveal smooth, glowing skin. Try using yogurt as a face mask by mixing two tablespoons of it with one tablespoon of honey and applying the mixture all over your face. Allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. You can also try out this yogurt face mask!

Fade dark circles and age spots.

Since the lactic acid in yogurt works to eliminate dead skin cells, pairing yogurt with some lemon juice (a natural skin brightener) can help fade away age spots and dark circles. Always perform a test patch on your skin first. To do it, mix one teaspoon of yogurt with one teaspoon of lemon juice and apply to any discolored areas. Allow the mixture to sit for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Use this treatment twice a week for best results!

Get luscious locks.

Yogurt is a great moisturizer for dry, brittle hair. Plus, the lactic acid content helps with scalp buildup that could be causing hair loss or conditions like dandruff. To use yogurt in your hair, simply apply the yogurt from the root all the way to the tips. Allow your hair mask to sit for 15 to 30 minutes before washing as usual in the shower. Your hair will be sleek and smooth!

Fertilize your plants.

Yogurt also makes a great all-natural plant fertilizer. Yogurt helps to add nitrogen and phosphorus to your soil which will help your plants grow nice and healthy. To use yogurt in the garden, mix equal parts water and yogurt and pour the mixture around the roots of your plants. You can do this once per month to boost your plants health!

Shine your dogs coat.

Just as it can be a moisturizer for your own hair, you can use yogurt to give Fido’s hair a healthy shine, too. To do it, perform a test patch to ensure there are no adverse reactions. Once that’s done, apply a thin layer of yogurt to your dogs coat and gently comb it through. Wash the yogurt out thoroughly with warm water.

Polish old brass.

Lactic acid in yogurt always works as a great polish for brass items like keys and jewelry that have gotten rusty. To use yogurt for polishing brass, apply yogurt all over the item in a thin layer and allow it to dry. Using a toothbrush, buff away any rust and gunk from the brass to reveal a shiny, new look!
