6 Simple Ways to Make Your Home More Zen, So It Feels Like You’re Walking Into a Spa


There are certain places, like day spas, that emanate such bliss that when you cross the threshold, your whole body sighs in relief and relaxation. The good news is, you can recreate this same zen feel in your own home with a few simple tricks and tips. “The key to a zen-infused environment is the art of incorporating elements of earth and nature,” says interior designer Lorena Gaxiola. To bring some zen into your house, Gaxiola shares her interior decorating tips. 

Light it up.

“Fire is a powerful natural element. Candles, fire pits, fire torches, or fireplaces are a great representation of the fire essence, which tends to intensify the energies within your space. Natural light promotes positive flow. Keep curtains and blinds open throughout the day, and use lamps or candles to illuminate dark spaces,” Gaxiola advises.

Sparkling Metallics

“Introduce metals into your home, as they represent clarity and protection,” Gaxiola says. “Combine different metals such as gold (known for prosperity), silver (which is aligned to purity), and copper (associated with sexuality). Incorporate colors such as white and grey. In Feng Shui, these shades play the role of reflective materials.”

Calming Water

“Water represents life and abundance. Where possible, keep the energies flowing by adding moving water, such as a small fountain,” says Gaxiola.

Wooden Elements

“Wood is one of the strongest elements in the zen spectrum, as it controls other elements in nature; it can stop water, create fire, and melt metal,” Gaxiola explains. Adding wooden accents such as a wooden side table or coffee table will bring that zen-like wooden power into your home.


Unclutter your home by organizing your accessories by color or size. It sounds a little OCD, but the organization of your home is a representation of your mind. Clear that space!” Gaxiola says.

Fresh Air

“Improve the quality of air in the home by introducing plants, foliage, and flora. Plants improve concentration and increase positive energy, enhancing positive feelings, reducing stress, and encouraging thinking,” Lorena adds.
