Nothing says “it’s the holidays” like the smell of a fresh tree and the aroma of baking cookies — and if you could use an extra dose of Christmas cheer this year, infusing your space with the scent of a sweet, spicy holiday potpourri is an easy way to get you in the mood for the big day. Whether it’s just you at home, or you’re expecting guests, this stovetop Christmas potpourri is quick to put together and will make your home smell like the season.
Sure, you can buy a bag of potpourri from the store — but why bother, when it’s cheap and easy to make from scratch? All you need is a few holiday staples you probably already have on hand, like cranberries and cinnamon sticks. Cleaning and lifestyle influencer LaTreese Atkins shows us how, whipping up a simple stovetop potpourri in minutes. In a medium pot, she combines the follow ingredients:
- 3 cups water
- 1 cup of fresh cranberries
- 1 orange, sliced
- 3 to 4 sprigs of rosemary
- 3 anise stars
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tablespoon whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons pine needles (optional)
Atkins covers the pot with a lid and places it over medium heat to allow the mixture to come to a boil. Then, she reduces the heat to medium-low so that it can gently simmer. She notes that this potpourri can bubble away on the stove for three to four hours. Just be sure to pour in more water as the mixture evaporates, and keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t burn.

After the potpourri has done its job of spreading holiday cheer throughout your home, let it completely cool before throwing it in the trash (or even better, the compost heap!).
I don’t know about you, but I’m putting this on the stove first thing Christmas morning. Happy holidays!
