How to Fix Scratched Wood With Walnuts

Tags:

Walnuts are known for being a healthy superfood that can help you live longer. But did you know this nutritious snack can also give the wood in your home a new lease on life? If your hardwood floors or furniture has gotten scratched over the years (it happens!), a raw walnut can make the nicks disappear.

According to Allstate, the nut’s unique natural oils have the ability to repair wood floors and furniture. It’s important to use a walnut that hasn’t been cooked or spiced in any way — not even with salt or sugar. Simply rub the raw nut over the scratch in the same direction as the wood grain until the unwanted mark disappears. Next, lightly brush over the area with your fingers in a few light strokes. Let it sit for about five minutes so the walnut’s fatty oils can sink into the wood, then buff the area with a soft cloth. That’s pretty much it!

This hack is best used for light superficial scratches, reports Family Handyman. Deep indentations in the wood or other serious damage may require extensive repair and professional help. If you just have a large number of lighter scratches, consider recruiting your family to help out and get the job done quicker. Young kiddos may even get a kick out of this task — bonus points since it might remind them of coloring. Just make sure no one tries to eat the walnuts afterward!

If you have pet cats or dogs, it’s a good idea to keep them out of the room until you’re done repairing the floor or furniture. According to ASPCA, walnuts can cause negative reactions in pets if consumed, especially pups. But if you or anyone in your home has an allergy to walnuts, skip this hack entirely and opt for alternative DIY repairs for wood scratches, such as coloring them in with a brown felt-tip marker or even a crayon.

Get ready to say hello to your good-as-new furniture!
