10 Interior Decorating Trends You’ll See Everywhere in 2019

Tags:

Staying ahead of the latest trends can be both tiring and confusing in the fast-paced world of design, where what’s cool one day can suddenly become passé when a magazine or influencer decides it is over.

The Decor and Design Show in Melbourne, Australia — where trend forecasters present the next big interior trends, innovative furniture, home decor items, and emerging designers — always delivers when it comes to discovering the latest trends and home decor designs before they become mainstream.

Victoria Redshaw, who works for trend-forecasting agency Scarlet Opus, presented the top interior trends from the show that we can expect to see more of in 2019.

Many people are now pursuing healthier lifestyles, and they care deeply about the source, preparation, and sustainability of the food they eat. As a result, designers and homeowners are beginning to explore the same standards of wellness via actual kitchen design. The evolving concept of the “wellness kitchen” is slowly transforming kitchen design to include:

  • Recycled, sustainable, and ultra-hygienic materials.
  • Designs and layouts that foster social interactions and nourish family relationships.
  • Structures that make chilled food and other provisions more visible and easier to access. This acts as a gentle visual reminder to include healthy ingredients in meals and helping us all to build a habit of awareness (because “out of sight is out of mind”).
  • An abundance of living produce that is actually grown in the kitchen in small-scale indoor urban farming units, which turn kitchens into a vibrant ecosystem.

The first step towards creating a “wellness kitchen” is to focus on simplicity. Simplicity has a therapeutic effect because it results in an ordered, organized, uncluttered, and tranquil environment that is soothing for the eyes and brain. It leans towards a minimalist style that is pared back, however it is not austere. Instead, it looks and feels relaxed, light, and airy. Ways to fulfill this include the use of:

  • Warmer, mid-tone woods that bring visual warmth.
  • Soothing pastels and neutrals such as stonewashed blues, muted sage green and rose-beige, oatmeal, early morning mist greys, and, most importantly, shades of apricot. Apricot and peach shades will be key colors in 2019.
  • Chalky, smooth, and matte finishes that are visually soft.

Bathroom Design Trends

When it comes to bathroom design trends, the bathroom has evolved to become a place of relaxation — a space devoted to personal wellbeing rather than purely a practical space. It is a sanctuary from the stresses of modern life, as well as an escape from the stresses within our own homes. Privacy, free time, and quiet are the new valued luxuries, therefore the desire to create a calming environment in bathrooms becomes stronger in 2019. Interestingly, the emerging style takes many of its aesthetic cues from living rooms, which results in the inclusion of:

  • Small, soft seats that are upholstered.
  • Clusters of feature pendent lighting with dimmer controls.
  • Soft accessories, such as cushions.

All of these elements make the bathroom another room in the home in which we can comfortably spend time relaxing and recharging.

2019 Color Trends

There is a definite dichotomy in relation to design aesthetics and colors across 2019 trends. Some of the color palettes are experimental, bold, and daring, while others are much more subtle, discreet, quiet, and still.

The palette is a nourishing, sun-bleached collection of gentle pastels and self-assured neutrals. From warm cotton and pale gold, the palette ventures into fleshy nudes, pale apricot-tinted tan, and both mellow and dusky shades of rose.

Hemp and pale bronze then ease us into early morning mist gray, desert sage, and stonewashed blue. These are colors that “sit back,” are soft, and quietly composed. They create a fulfilling sense of stillness and tranquillity. One of my top colour tips for 2019 is to opt for muted shades of apricot. Also look out for crisp shades of mint, watermelon, flourishing greens, cocoa browns, shades of terra-cotta, and Klein blue.

Design Influences

It is significant from a trend forecaster’s perspective that in recent years, we have all endured a period of radical change; political disruption; prejudice and social inequality; heightened threats; and the exposure of the abuse of power of trusted individuals and organizations. In response to this, we are predicting a rebellious, non-conformist-yet-collaborative attitude will emerge, dismissing the rules of the norm and rejecting the dictates of the establishment and the media. It is about the pursuit and expression of freedom and refusing to be controlled.

In design terms, we are forecasting a trend that is experimental, advocates creativity, and facilitates spontaneity. It will embrace chance, unexpected experiences, and a sense of wonder. Expressive and radical, it is multicultural, multicolored, multilayered, and pushes multi-use spaces in a more extreme direction, no longer segmenting uses, activities, and needs into different spaces. This gives you the freedom to do what you want, when you want, wherever you want. The colors are bright and bold, the materials are innovative in their recycling methods, the products are adaptable, and the patterns are dynamic.

While it’s natural to use trends as a starting point to developing a style, curating your own look is essential to creating a home that is authentic to you. Tune in to yourself and think about what makes you happy, relaxed, comfortable, and improves your sense of wellbeing. Then set out to create room schemes that satisfy those feelings. This is the most direct route to a home style that will bring you contentment. Author your own life. Design your own style.
