Summer is basically here, and that means it’s time to start paying extra attention to our water intake. Since we sweat more in the warmer months, we need to drink more H20 to keep our cells hydrated. But if you feel like drinking plain water is kind of a drag, you can try adding in some tasty ingredients that will help boost water absorption and leave you feeling energized and your skin looking radiant. Enter — cucumber water.
You might be used to drinking cucumber water at the spa, but with all its health benefits, you may want to start indulging on the regular. I even like to add a few extra ingredients besides water and sliced cucumber that make the beverage taste even more amazing and boost its nutrient profile. Trust me, you’ll want to sip this refreshing drink all day long.
My unique recipe calls for filtered water, cucumber slices, lime juice, aloe vera juice, and a little coconut water. If you’re strictly sugar-free, omit the coconut water. If not, I encourage you to try it because just a small amount adds vital electrolytes that boost hydration! Not only that, but coconut water also contains antioxidants and other nutrients like magnesium, potassium, manganese, and vitamin C — all of which boost skin and immune health, and even aid in digestion.
The next ingredient I use is lime juice, which is loaded with nutrients like vitamin A, B, and C as well as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These vitamins boost hydration, improve digestion, and help fight off infections and long-term diseases. Not only that, but the taste of a little lime juice goes a long way in making this drink super refreshing when it’s hot out.
Finally, I add a few ounces of unsweetened aloe vera juice, which you can find at your local pharmacy or online (Buy on Amazon, $29.57). Aloe vera is a health boosting superfood that will give your skin a boost from the inside out. Aloe vera is also an alkaline food that can help reduce acidity in your body, and it’s a potent digestive aid. Aloe is even said to reduce heartburn and acid reflux!
Last but not least, you can also add fresh herbs like mint or even parsley to your drink. This is totally optional, but mint makes this recipe even more refreshing and cooling, and herbs like parsley help boost liver function!
If you’re ready to get sipping, here’s my recipe for cucumber water with an even healthier twist.
- 6 ounces filtered water
- 4 ounces coconut water
- 5-10 slices fresh cucumber
- Juice of ½ lime
- 2 ounces unsweetened aloe vera juice
- Fresh herbs to taste, like mint or parsley (optional)
To make your juice, simply add all ingredients to a large mason jar (16-ounce size will work), cover and shake, and allow the mixture to “cold steep” in your fridge for at least an hour before drinking. You can also make a pitcher of your juice and keep it in the fridge by increasing each ingredient depending on your pitcher size. Trust us, one drink is probably not going to be enough. I tend to make a large 96-ounce batch in the morning and by evening, it’s gone!
