You’re standing at the counter of your favorite coffee chain, deciding whether or not you should treat yourself to a donut or be “healthy” and go with the muffin. Let’s be honest: The donut is more appealing with its chocolate frosting and sprinkles; the muffin, on the other hand, is a gritty, crumbly mess. But contrary to what you might think, the donut the healthier choice — at least according to one doctor.
Store-bought muffins are huge (speaking of which, when did muffins get to be so large?!), so snacking on one, even if it’s a seemingly healthy blueberry or bran muffin, is a surefire way to unknowingly load up your body with tons of unnecessary calories and sugar. Yoni Freedhoff, MD, aptly pointed this out in a tweet.

And according to Dunkin’ Donuts’ nutrition facts, Freedhoff’s logic bears out.A blueberry donut at DD has 460 calories and 43 — yes, 43 — grams of sugar. Compare that to a Boston Kreme donut — which is decidedly more decadent than, say, a glazed donut — which has 300 calories and 17 grams of sugar. If you do the math, a blueberry donut has roughly 2.5 times more sugar than a donut. And not just any donut at that — one filled with creamy custard and topped with a thick layer of chocolate. (Is anyone else’s mouth watering right now thanks to all this donut talk?)
Now, that’s news we can cheer for (donuts raised high!). That said, try not to think of it as permission to run out and chow down on double the donuts. Everything in moderation, right?
