Hoda and Savannah Are Best Friends on the ‘TODAY’ Show and in Real Life

Two months after Matt Lauer’s shocking TODAY show firing, co-anchors Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb couldn’t be happier to be working side-by-side. “Savannah and I started anchoring together and it’s weird,” Hoda, 53, said during a joint Tonight Show appearance with Savannah on Wednesday, January 17. “If you’ve ever met a friend and had a moment and said, ‘Wow, that was so much fun!’ It works and it’s so much fun.”

“Hoda said it was like a first date, and I’m like, ‘I’m easy and desperate!’ It just clicked and felt so good. We’re so happy,” Savannah, 46, added. Hoda was officially named Matt’s replacement at the anchor desk on Tuesday, January 2. Since then, the co-stars have been adjusting to their new normal on TODAY. “It was hard, everyone saw it,” Savannah told Jimmy Fallon. “We all went through it, but you know as you say, something really lovely and positive has happened. And I think that’s where we’re focused and we have the best staff.”

In a previous interview with People, the duo said they’ve leaned on each other after Matt’s sexual misconduct scandal. “I think you could see from the moment that the news happened that our hearts were broken, and in lots of ways, they still are. That feeling was shared through our whole newsroom and our whole TODAY show staff, because it sounds like [a] cliché or a promo line, but it happens to be true: We are family, and we do love each other, and families do go through hard times, and when that happens in good families, you just get closer,” Savannah said.

“We were just trying to make it through those days together,” Hoda added. “Sometimes when you go through something with someone, you see something special. I think that’s what happened.” Savannah and Hoda’s co-star Al Roker also recently opened up about Hoda’s transition to TODAY co-anchor. “It’s one of those things where it’s just completely natural. Hoda’s been there and everybody loves Hoda, so it’s been seamless,” he said.
