Salma Hayek Opens Up About Her Most Surprising Menopause Symptom

Tags:

It may be hard to believe, but Salma Hayek will turn 55 in just a few months. The gorgeous actress recently opened up about how she’s embracing her age, even when it comes to some surprising symptoms of menopause.

While sitting down for a chat with Jada Pinkett Smith and the ladies of Red Table Talk, Hayek explained that she’s been going through “the change” since her mid-40s. Out of all of the many symptoms that can happen during menopause, we can’t say we’ve heard a lot of people talk about a major one she went through.

“The boobs grow a lot,” she said. “For some women, they get smaller. But there are some women that when you gain weight, your boobs grow. And when you have children and you breastfeed, your boobs grow and they don’t go back down. And then in some of the cases when you are in menopause, they grow again. And I just happen to be one of those women that it happened in every single step!”

Hayek then mentioned how several headlines over the years tried to claim cosmetic surgery was behind her amplified bosom. “A lot of people said that I had breast augmentation and I don’t blame them! My boobs were smaller, [but] so was the rest of my body,” she joked. “But they have just kept growing. Many, many sizes. And my back has been really suffering from it. And not a lot of people talk about this.”

Like other women, she also admitted to being terrified by questions from her doctor when menopause started — asking whether or not she was growing new body hair, suddenly gaining weight, becoming more irritable and crying all the time, or experiencing vaginal dryness. However, Hayek said that no matter what symptoms popped up, she’s found a way to “notice those moments and take a deep breath and kind of say, ‘OK, it’ll pass. You got to hold it together.’” She did add, though, “The hot flashes aren’t fun.”

The actress brought all of this up while discussing her latest role in Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. She explained that her character was originally written as a woman in her 40s, but Hayek lobbied to stay closer to her actual age. “I say, let’s make it a woman in her 50s and I think we should make it about her having to do all this action while she’s going through menopause,” she explained. “You can kick ass at any age!”

There’s no denying Hayek is proof of that herself! You can watch the full Red Table Talk episode on Facebook and check out her film in theaters now.
