‘Pretty Little Liars’ Cast: Take a Note From ‘A’ and Learn All About the Stars Today

If you turned on ABC Family, now Freeform, between 2010 and 2017, chances are you caught an episode or two of Pretty Little Liars. The hit drama, which started out as a series of books by Sara Shepard, was an absolute force. And because the Pretty Little Liars cast starred up-and-coming actresses and some familiar faces, the show had storylines that could appeal to all audiences.
Pretty Little Liars, created by I. Marlene King, took over the internet as well with social media on the rise at the same time the show aired. Audiences would tune into the series while also having the growing social media platforms to share their thoughts about who “A” — the antagonist and threat of the show — might be.

In 2017, the series finale, “Till DeAth Do Us Part – Part 1 & 2,” became the most tweeted about TV episode, reaching 1.7 million tweets in less than 24 hours.
The drama follows the lives of four teenage girls who are dealing with the disappearance of their best friend, Alison DiLaurentis. A year after she is gone and presumed dead, the girls start to receive threatening text messages from an anonymous texter who goes by “A.” The faceless texter seems to know each of the girls’ darkest secrets, including what really happened to Alison.
While dealing with the frightening reality that “A” can expose the liars for all their wrongdoings, they are also dealing with typical teenage problems: friendships, relationships and how to heal from the damage caused by their friend Alison.

Lucy Hale as Aria Montgomery: Pretty Little Liars cast
Aria Montgomery, one of the core four in the Pretty Little Liars cast, was played by Lucy Hale. But Hale shared that she almost didn’t take the role. “I was offered another pilot, but my gut kept telling me to go towards Pretty Little Liars.” Luckily, she recognized that her gut was making sense and the rest is history.
Though she got into a lot of trouble as Aria (like dating her English teacher), Hale has been busy starring in major movies. A big year for the actress was 2018 as she starred in The Unicorn, Truth or Dare, and Dude. Hale also played the lead in the series Life Sentence that same year, which lasted 13 episodes.
Hale seemed to have a knack for romantic comedies, as she went on to star in A Nice Girl Like You (2020), The Hating Game (2021), Puppy Love (2023) and Which Brings Me to You (2023). In 2020, she took on the role of Katy Keene, a character from the Riverdale universe who got a spinoff show of the same name, but it only lasted one season before its cancellation.
Troian Bellisario as Spencer Hastings
Spencer Hastings, who was rumored to be “A” at one time, was portrayed by Troian Bellisario. The actress, who is 38 now, grew up on the series as the uptight genius, Spencer. When the show ended, Bellisario shared, “I was 23 when we shot the pilot. It’s longer than you go to high school for, it’s longer than you go to college… This will always be my family and my home. I don’t know how I can really say goodbye to something that is so integral to me.”
The actress has gone on to play smaller roles since her major part in the Pretty Little Liars cast. Bellisario starred in the film Feed (2017), which she is also the credited writer of; and had roles in the movies Clara (2018) and Where’d You Go, Bernadette (2019).

Bellisario made her directorial debut on Pretty Little Liars, and has since directed an episode on I. Marlene King’s other series, Famous in Love (2018). Then, from 2019 to 2023, she directed six episodes of Good Trouble.
The Pretty Little Liars alum married fellow actor Patrick J. Adams in 2016. The couple has two daughters.
Ashley Benson as Hanna Marin: Pretty Little Liars cast
Hanna Marin, who was given the nickname “Hefty Hanna,” turned into the popular It-Girl, and was portrayed by Ashley Benson. The actress explained that she sees her time on Pretty Little Liars “as my college years. We were together for seven years, and I saw them more than my own family.”
The actress has since only taken smaller TV and film roles, like Private Property, Alone at Night, The Loneliest Boy in the World and Angry Neighbors (all 2022). Benson’s most recent role was as Cara on Wilderness (2023). Benson married Brandon Davis in 2023 and the two recently welcomed a child together.
Shay Mitchell as Emily Fields
Emily Fields, who spent her high school career trying to get a swimming scholarship (and being blackmailed by “A”), was portrayed by Shay Mitchell. An impactful role for her, she explained, “It’s one of the best characters that I may ever play, because of the [impact] she had on so many different people. So I’m very fortunate I was able to be the one to bring Emily to life.”
Since her time in the Pretty Little Liars cast, Mitchell has had a couple of major roles. In 2018, she starred in the hit Netflix series You, as Peach Salinger. From 2019 to 2022, she starred in Dollface alongside Kat Dennings and Brenda Song. The actress has also starred in a few movies, including The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018) and Something from Tiffany’s (2022).
Mitchell is also an entrepreneur and is the founder of BÉIS Travel, a company that sells travel gear and accessories. The Pretty Little Liars alum has been with partner Matte Babel since 2017 and the couple have two children, Atlas and Rome.
Sasha Pieterse as Alison DiLaurentis: Pretty Little Liars cast
The infamous Alison DiLaurentis, who was presumed dead for most of the series, was portrayed by Sasha Pieterse. Once her character was confirmed to be alive, Pieterse felt she was playing a new person. “There’s a lot more dimension to her character,” she explained. “I’m creating a new Alison. I have the beauty of playing around in my character and trying to just transform her into so many situations I was never able to do before.”
In 2018 she starred in the movie The Honor List before reprising her role as Alison DiLaurentis on Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists (2019). That series, unfortunately, was canceled after only one season. The actress married her husband, Hudson Sheaffer, in 2018, and the couple has one child.
Janel Parrish as Mona Vanderwaal
Mona Vanderwaal, or as many remember her, the original “A,” was portrayed by Janel Parrish. Although audiences found out in the season 2 finale that Mona was “A” all along, the actress had no clue. “About three weeks before the [Season 2] finale, she [Marlene King] called me and was like, ‘I just wanna prepare you mentally for the role. You’re going to be A and it’s gonna say you die, but you don’t die.’ So, I found out very, very close to the time we filmed it.”
After her time in the Pretty Little Liars cast, Parrish went on to star in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy. In 2019, she joined costar Pieterse for Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. Parrish became a part of the Hallmark family in 2020 with her movie, Holly & Ivy. Some of her other Hallmark films include Right in Front of Me (2021) and Coyote Creek Christmas (2021). The actress’ most recent project was Never Been Chris’d (2023).
Parrish married husband Chris Long, in 2018.
Ian Harding as Ezra Fitz: Pretty Little Liars cast
Though his storyline as an English teacher who dates his student (Lucy Hale) was one the more controversial ones, Ezra Fitz and the actor who played him, Ian Harding, was still a fan favorite. While fans were excited about his relationship with Aria, Harding knew it was a strange role to play. Nonetheless, a love story with Hale was no problem.
He explained, “For me, there wasn’t a lot to get over. You just said, ‘Ok, well, this is a love story.’ You just play the love of these two people, and it’s the same sort of trials and tribulations that some relationships have.”
Harding has gone on to have roles in multiple movies, including Thin Ice (2017), Office Uprising (2018) and Ford v Ferrari (2019). He then appeared in one episode of The Perfectionists spinoff and had an 11-episode arc on Chicago Med. Most recently, the Pretty Little Liars actor starred in the series Long Slow Exhale (2022). Harding married Sophie Hart in 2019 and the couple has one child together.
Tyler Blackburn as Caleb Rivers
Bad boy Caleb Rivers, who was played by Tyler Blackburn, was a major character in the Pretty Little Liars cast. While he portrayed Hanna Marin’s boyfriend, he maintained relationships with all the characters in the series.
Blackburn spoke with Seventeen in 2011, explaining Caleb is “pretty street savvy. He’s a hustler in some ways. You know the girls in Rosewood have a certain air about them, and he kind of laughs it off.”
Blackburn went on to star in Hello Again (2017) and Capsized: Blood in the Water (2019). Also in 2019, he snagged the role of Alex Manes in Roswell, New Mexico, and was on the series until its end in 2022.
Keegan Allen as Toby Cavanaugh: Pretty Little Liars cast
Although everybody was convinced Toby Cavanaugh was “A” for most of the first season, Keegan Allen’s character went on to be an integral part of the Pretty Little Liars cast. Just before the finale of the series, Allen shared his connection with the show.
“These are people that I grew up with — not just the people on the show, but the fans and the crew … It’s the end of a chapter in my life, but I’m really happy and pleased with the work that we’ve all done together.”
After the drama series ended, Allen had a few small roles, including Major Crimes (2017), What/If and Zeroville (both 2019). In 2020, he had a lead role in the movie Follow Me. Allen’s most recent role is as Liam Walker on the series, Walker, which is scheduled for a fourth season.
